Grantham Town won 1-0 at Brigg this afternoon in the Lincs Cup.

So, therefore we are due to travel to Grantham on Wednesday evening.

Just wondering what strength of team we will field bearing in mind that we have a home friendly against Huddersfield on  Tuesday evening.

New rules for County Cup this year include.....

You can play trialists.

You can name and use 7 subs.

Should make it interesting.

Grantham Mariner will see you all there........

I would expect to see a strong team against Huddersfield and those players who have had knocks recently and are a bit behind with fitness, plus the youth players being the main part of the Wednesday team.

Both games should see most of the squad get a full 90 minutes under their belt.

A shame for me personally as boys live within view of Briggs ground and always loved the short trip out there to watch Town anyway.

Not known the likes of Grantham and Brigg being opponents in Senior Cup in recent times -has the format been changed somewhat?

Just so long as final, should we reach it, is not after season started like last year's debacle!

Someone might want to tell Grantham Town that the game is this Wednesday because this article, written by Club Secretary Pat Nixon, states "date of the tie to be confirmed" and the fixture list on the right hand side of the page has it down as (Saturday) 25th July at 3pm at the same time that Grantham have an away friendly at Gresley.

Further more Grantham have a friendly with Mansfield Town on Thursday night- me and GranthamMariner play darts for the Grantham Town FC Social Club and we have had to re-arrange a darts fixture because of it.

OS... No date for Grantham yet

The Meres is unavailable on Wednesday- I seem to think the Athletics Club meet on Wednesdays.

If I had to guess a date I would predict Monday 27th or Thursday 30th July.

BTW I was right... Wednesday = Athletics Night

It's been rearranged for this Thursday the 30th. It has been mentioned on the OS and on here.

Doesn't sound like there will be any first team regulars involved tomorrow.

Quoted Text
"Every year we have the Lincs Cup and we're told that we have to play games by a certain date and so we plan pre-season around that.

"We pencilled in when we were going to play Grantham, but then a couple of days before we were due to play, we find out that they can't play it.

"I don't know if it was the Lincolnshire FA or Grantham, but we then provided an alternative and they didn't want to do that either.

"So as a result we won't be taking anything like a first-choice team tomorrow night – it'll be Youth lads and the young pros.

"Therefore, I know that we'll be taking nowhere near as many fans as we perhaps would have done, but there you go.

"I'm not fussed at all about the result tomorrow night – it'll be a good test for our young lads and that's it really."

Sorry, I don't buy it at all.

If we were that keen on getting it played in the week that the Lincs FA scheduled that round for we would have left last Tuesday (21st July) free. But we didn't, we played Huddersfield Town instead. Both Grantham & Brigg Town had left the date free. We chose not to.

It seems obvious that we never intended to send the First Team to this match. We clearly wanted to play it last Wednesday with the squad that went to the hastily arranged friendly with Brigg, but Grantham don't have access to their stadium on Wednesdays.

I don't know if there are any rules about putting out a strong team and whether the Lincs FA have any power to take action against us, but to me we are just trying to shift the blame when we had to no intention of sending the first team squad.

It doesn't bother me what side we put out as I live just over a mile from Grantham's stadium and I would go whatever, but I think the club is big enough not to try and point the finger at a semi-pro Evostik Premier side to justify the squad we always planned to field.

Not GTFC related but do Clee Town play in this?

But Golly, the Wednesday date was announced as the date of the fixture weeks before the Brigg/Grantham game was announced so why didn't Grantham make a point then of saying they couldn't play it on that date?

Announced by who? Us on our OS and to the local media? It takes 2 to organise a fixture, not just the bigger club trying to bully the smaller one in to accepting unsuitable dates.

Grantham Town never committed to playing on that date, why would they when they don't have access to their stadium on Wednesdays. And that's not a new situation, it's been the same for nearly 25 years since they moved there.

The truth is we wanted to play on that Wednesday and announced it without properly consulting with both possible opponents and checking whether it was a viable date. Brigg were obviously happy with it (as we played them anyway) and Grantham couldn't.

Anyway, that's irrelevent. My disappointed in Grimsby's actions are that they have now used the argument over a date as an excuse to field a youth team and have blamed Grantham for it. You only have to look at our fixtures to see that there was never any free date where we would have sent a strong side. We always intended to send a weakened team. To point the finger at Grantham like they are in the wrong is disappointing and is the sort of thing that I thought we had moved away from in the last couple of years.

Re: Cleethorpes Town.

The new format (10 teams) was agreed last season and the draw made before Brigg Town were relegated. At the time the competitions included all clubs in Lincolnshire playing at Level 8 (Evostik Northern Premier League Divison One North/South and above). Brigg Town now play in the same division as Cleethorpes Town.

It is highly unlikely that either Brigg Town or Cleethorpes Town will be in the competition next season, unless either win promotion to Step 8. There are plenty of step 9 clubs in Lincolnshire:-
Barton Town Old Boys (NCEL Premier)
Boston Town (UCL Premier)
Brigg Town (NCEL Premier)
Cleethorpes Town (NCEL Premier)
Deeping Rangers (UCL Premier)
Harrowby United (UCL Premier)
Holbeach United (UCL Premier)
Sleaford Town (UCL Premier)
So I am guessing out for fairness you either include all 8 and have a 17 team competition or have none and go with 9 teams next season.

NO   we was beaten fair and square,

We do not want to go into the new season with 10 wins out of 10,

We would then lose our 1st league game,

Now we can go and hammer Kiddi :)
