Ryan Bowman injured for Gateshead.

Good. Really high winds here in Gateshead. Prospects of a poor game high, it'll suit them due to them being long ball merchants under Aspin presumably. UTM

Not sure what Clay's done wrong? Nolan did look dangerous last week though when he came on.

Nothing , just not consistent and that's our weak point in the team now IMO

What happens if one of the defenders (one of them being Josh Gowling) gets injured. Monkhouse at centre half? Arnold at full back? It doesn't bare thinking about.

Assume Arnold to FB and Dis to Centre Half if one of the defenders came off...............Squad's looking a bit thin at the moment.

Worryingly short on defensive cover...East has hardly kicked a ball and was injured last week, Pearson missing....we might need the right calibre of player long term but just about anything defensive cover wise would be welcome now.

FT - 1:0 defeat :(

Town off form in the first half leaves us with nothing to show for a better showing in the second period

Not too down at us having lost in the league for the first time since October but slip ups like this means we're unlikely to be champs come the end of the season :-/
Posted by: pontoonlew, January 30, 2016, 4:58pm; Reply: 142
Yet again we've gone behind against a decent side and failed to do anywhere near enough to get back into the game.

Yet Forest Green have just got a last minute winner after being 1-0 down, Cheltenham have done the same last week. Both against good sides. We continually fail to turn games around against good sides. We've been on superb form and that cannot be ignored. But we're still not good enough, we're still too far away from being ruthless enough or having the tactical nous to turn things on their head out of nothing.

And Amond is indeed injured, what a shite day.

FGR and Cheltenham find a way to win their tight games.

We don't often enough.

We look like the 3rd best team in this league.

Not going to slate team - been a brilliant run- my support stays till the end of the season for which i accept will be a play off pot luck finale. We won 9/10 and didnt get close, 3 last minute winners in a week and 2 teams that dont lose- you need a bit of luck and we dont have it. Devastated tonight but we can do it, one way or another

You hope, with displays like today's we will struggle to get that far let alone win the playoff final - the squad is too small, Podge might be out for a while (thigh injury they think) and watch out for Tranmere with a late run for the playoffs. Forest Green, Eastleigh and Tranmere plus Town right now I wouldn't fancy our chances It's all going mammaries up again!

I know we cant win every game but Chelts and VGR are doing so (93rd min again for VGR today)
So hate to have to even say this but
its play offs again
we deserve better
we have the best fans, and the best players and
we havent done much wrong so far,  only 4th defeat of season, but have felt unsure since driving back from Alty which seems a long time ago.
Bitterley dissapointed.

Fated not to be our day.

FGR late winner again and even Lincoln win.  Akpro scored for Shrewsbury as they beat Wed 3-2 with a 97th minute winner.  (We could have beaten them 5-0 away in the replay).

We have done things wrong this season. A ridiculous rotation policy early season (for the 3rd season in a row) has left us chasing it by September. We can't bemoan luck. We've not beaten good sides enough this season, it's as simple as that. Perhaps we're not quite as good as we believe.

What's more depressing is another side are rebuilding quicker than us yet again.

What did nolan do to waltz straight in to the team ?

If you going to change the centre mid at least have some one better than your replacing.

This jan window has been bizzarre in terms of quality letting players leave to leave us well short and intent for the title.

I just cannot understand people being so negative after one defeat and one draw in 10 games. As for Hurst out, how pathetic is that? Who will you replace him with? Sir Alex? We're in the Conference and in my opinion have the best manager possible at our level. We've had some pretty bad luck what with FGR and to a lesser degree Cheltenham winning recently with 93rd minute goals but we have to support the team, we have to believe. UTMM.

I've never thought Cheltenham would be Champions and I'm still afraid FGR will pip them. If I'm right it might improve Grimsby's chances in the play-offs.

I think most of us believe we will still be pushing hard for the rest of the season just in case the front runners slip up but neither Cheltenham or FGR show any sign of doing that.

That's why lots are disappointed....we all know we might be good enough to win the league but it's more or less out of our hands now and three more months of just giving our best to cement the play off place before that lottery commences is hard to take after days like today :(

Can you say its either  bad or good luck , depending on perspective,  when it keeps happening? The harder you work the luckier you get as they say.
Did we do enough both effort and tactically wise to win...obviously not.....whereas they have done.

Second half it sounded as though we equalled up the effort, but to win the game we had to beat their effort and beat their tactics. We did neither in reality.

Amond a dead leg according to Hurst and dosent expect him to miss any games.

I'd like to make 3 points. 1, we didn't play badly at all. The conditions were awful and wind is a leveller, it certainly effected us more than it did them. 2, everyone slagging Hurst off for playing Nolan over Clay. I say this. Nolan was definitely our best player in the second half, he pinged it around nicely, drove forward well and got as close as anyone did in terms of scoring. 3, there is still plenty of football to be played, we aren't completely out of it, it's a tough ask but not impossible, we now absolutely have to go to both FGR and Cheltenham and win. Keep the faith everyone!

Look I don't want to be negative because we've done too well lately but Hurst isn't the best manager possible at our level. You may not like that but it's simply not true. I'm not asking for him out for one second, but he's had a bloody good budget for years and managers are still rebuilding and surpassing him quicker.
Posted by: Maringer, January 30, 2016, 5:44pm; Reply: 174
Regarding Nolan, from the little I've seen of him (his sub appearance last week), he looks to have a lot more pace than any of our other central midfielders. That's the one thing we've been badly lacking so I can understand why he might be preferred to Clay.

As for the result, hate to say it but I think we just lack that certain extra thing you need to be champions. Cheltenham and now FGR seem to pull it out of the bag most of the time when required, but we don't seem to get the results when our performances have been below-par. Just not quite good enough in most areas of the field, unfortunately.

I'm not saying it is impossible for us to go on another fantastic run of form but the results against Cheltenham, Guiseley and now Gateshead were all worse than they needed to be. One goal either way in each game would have seen us with another 4 points now but we're just not quite there. It's bloody difficult to win any league, however. Bear in mind that Buckley, regarded as our best modern manager, didn't come close to winning the league in any of his promotion seasons.

He didnt have to as there were more places up for grabs to get promoted.

However with our full first team squad i would be very confident if it comes down to the play off's whereas i havnt been confident in any of our other recent play off or cup final games.

We can make excuses, we can gloss over stuff, but the facts remain the same.we drop points when fgr and Cheltenham don't. We get the place we deserve. Play offs look a certainty. Unfortunately disappointment looks likely as well- does anyone really think we can put together 3 tip top performances and ride our luck to get that coveted spot? I am so pisssed off. Really thought at 14.00 last Sunday that it was game on.a week is a long time in football

McLaughlin dominating the game, typical.

Our fans sound superb mind, but we're nowhere near getting into this game at the minute. Need an individual piece of brilliance.

I always read the match thread especially for moments like this...I can only assume that his name was being spoken a lot by Tondeur and ? Having watched the game I genuinely didn't see very much difference between the Paddy we had and the Paddy on show today. Some moments of excellence interspersed with long periods where he hid from the action.
Gateshead's number 12 (Mafuta?) was head and shoulders over all of the midfielders on show today. We could do worse than get someone in his mould into the side...

Played in his correct position though, he will influence games and score and create goals. All the stats say so, and so he should. To be absolutely fair, Hurst didn't trust him there and barely played him. There you go. Obviously we'd rather have centre midfielders who break up play and win tackles.

I liked Paddy when he was here. Gave us some great moments but IMO too few. Managers decide how they want their teams to play and recruit staff accordingly. Once Paddy couldn't perform in the way Hurst wanted then it was kind of inevitable he'd be on his way.
My previous post was to point out that in my opinion he didn't "dominate the game" today regardless of what position he was played in
Posted by: chaos33, January 30, 2016, 11:00pm; Reply: 183
Yeah fair enough, but he was misused or underused and as a result, was wasted. Just look at that goal he scored against Northampton, and ask yourself ...could any of our centre midfielders do that? Do we have a need for a centre midfielder who might score 10 and make 10 a season? Yes, I think, is the answer. It's not what Hurst wants though, hence the decision to keep Clay (for instance), who might make or score 3 or 4 goals but have a greater physical influence.

Both of us have commented in the past about our general lack of bite in our central midfield area. I'm still not sure how putting Paddy in there would have improved that. He can and does score goals but in a set up where budgetary constraints dictate that we need "extras" from our players, he could have been construed as a luxury. I guess it comes down to need and Hurst clearly decided that we "needed" that physical approach more than we needed Paddy's goals. By the same token Arnold, playing where Hurst wanted Paddy to play contributes goals and defensive qualities.
Paddy clearly looks more at ease now than he did here. Sometimes some things just have to be.
As I say I enjoyed a lot about his spell here but we have to move on...
