Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Cometh The Hour

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/09/2012

ANTHONY Elding was the unlikely hero for Town at Barrow on Tuesday night, just hours after being cast as the pantomime villain. Elding slapped in a transfer request this week after his frustration at being left on the bench.

But at Barrow last night he came off the bench and scored the two goals which rescued a point for Town in a match which they looked destined to lose. Elding's performance and goals might just get him the place in the starting line up that he feels he should have.

Town made just one change, being in young Southwell in place of Greg Pearson.

In the early stages Barrow looked the more dangerous of the sides, but in a half of few chances there was little action until McKeown had to make a great save to deny Barrow just before half time.

That looked to be that for the first period but deep In first half injury time and with Grimsby temporarily down to 10 men with Pearson off injured, Frankie Artus brought a player down (although any contact was minimal) to give the home side a penalty, from which they scored.

Town almost equalised at the start of the second half from a corner but Pond's effort hit the post.

From another corner Pearson seemed to have hit the ball over the line, but it was adjudged not to have gone over.

It didn't look like it was going to be Town's night after Jackson added a second when substitute Andi Thanoj gave the ball away straight after coming on, and Rowe crossed for Jackson.

Former Barrow striker Cook was then replaced by Elding after an hour of the game gone to the derision of the home supporters.

Almost straight away Town claimed a lifeline with the two substitutes contributing. Thanoj played a brilliant ball to Colbeck who crossed for Elding to tap it in.

Town then won a pen when Colbeck was tripped and Elding scored to level. Almost immediately Southwell headed wide from a great chance for Town to win it.

Both teams had late chances but Town can be pleased with a good point in the end.

Town: McKeown, Wood, Pond, S Pearson, Thomas, Colbeck, Niven, Artus, Disley, Southwell, Cook

Subs: Hatton, Elding, Ford, Soares, Thanoj.
