Town Draw Blank at Rovers

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 09/08/2014

GRIMSBY and Bristol Rovers fought out a goalless game of few chances this afternoon in the opening match of the season in the new Conference league. The home side had more clear scoring chances, but Town striker Lenell John-Lewis missed the best chance of the game in the second half.

Grimsby were forced into several changes due to injury and suspension, but new signing Alan Connell was returned in time to be able to make his second Grimsby debut, partnering Lenell John-Lewis up front.

After a first have of very few chances, Town almost took the lead early in the second half when a Paddy McLaughlin was pawed to safety by former Town 'keeper Steve Mildenhall.

James McKeown then kept Town in the game standing up well to deflect a chance for Taylor in a one-on-one with the Grimsby stopper.

The game's best chance though came on the hour mark. A cross from Town was punched out not very effectively by Mildenhall and Disley's shot was cleared off the line. The ball bounced out to John-Lewis in the six yard box who swung his foot to the ball but failed to make a clean contact and spooned it wide from point blank range.

In the closing twenty minutes Rovers looked the stronger side but Town held firm to record what may turn out to be a valuable away point at the bookies clear favourite for promotion.
