Town Fall to Brodie's Late Sucker Punch

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 01/10/2014

TOWN fell to a late sucker punch when Southport won for the first time in 28 away matches. To make the pain even greater it was former Grimsby striker Richard Brodie who scored the late winning goal. Earlier in the match John-Lewis had missed the best of the few chances which Grimsby created.

John-Lewis was the only change to the starting line-up, being a straight swap for Rhys Oates up front.

Town had the bulk of possession in the first half but created very few clear cut chances. In fact Richard Brodie had the best effort of the game for the visitors, forcing a smart save from McKeown in a warning sign for Grimsby. Town's only effort of note came from John-Lewis, who was played through late in the first half but his shot from a narrow angle was straight at the 'keeper.

John-Lewis was played through on goal by Hannah early in the second half, and decided to shoot early, but his effort lacked the strength to beat the 'keeper who tipped it wide of the post - although the referee failed to give a corner.

McKeown made a good save to deny Fitzpatrick, then Town went close at the other end when Toto Nsiala had a header cleared off the line.

Brodie's goal came from a short corner which caught the Town defence unaware and the first person to react to a loose ball in the box was Richard Brodie who gleefully poked in from short range with eight minutes to go.

Town, who lacked the creativity all night to break down a well organised Southport side, failed to muster anything in the final ten minutes other than a couple of attempts from distance.
