Town Win On the Cards

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/11/2014

GRIMSBY picked up a much-needed home win to go some way towards banishing the memories of Saturday's defeat to Kidderminster. Town took a two goal lead against the Cards and looked to have the game under control.

However a 67th minute goal from Morgan handed the initiative to Woking, who shortly afterwards were unlucky to strike the post for what would have been an equaliser. Finally John-Lewis put the game beyond doubt in the 89th minute with Grimsby's third.

Town started in a rare 4-4-2 formation with Neilson missing out in midfield and Pittman coming into attack. Left back Aswad Thomas was taken ill so missed the chance to play against his former club, who started the evening one point below Town in third place.

After a bright start, Craig Disley fired Town into the lead on 14 minutes, when he headed in a cross by Magnay.

Town could have gone 2-0 up but sub 'keeper Howe made a point blank save to deny Disley a second goal.

Woking lost 'keeper Jake Cole and striker Scott Rendell in the first half through injury. The Cards had their chances but never managed to force a save from McKeown in the opening period where Jack Marriott missed the best of the Card's chances.

After the break Pittman and John-Lewis combined and John-Lewis scored Town's second after a mistake by the Woking 'keeper.

With Town seemingly coasting Woking substitute Morgan managed to get a shot on goal which crept past McKeown in off the post. Woking almost straight away scored a second when a shot by Payne hit the foot of the post with McKeown beaten.

After a few worrying minutes Town put the game to bed. A run by Ross Hannah was played into the box by Arnold and John-Lewis poked the ball in the net.

Grimsby went on to win and are now six points behind Barnet after the Bees lost to Bristol Rovers.
