Winless Run Ends at Boreham Wood

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/09/2015

GRIMSBY returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Boreham Wood that in many ways was similar to many other recent games. Town dominated the game and missed a host of chances. The difference in this game was Grimsby scored first and eventually went on to lead 3-0.

The Mariners then conceded another sloppy goal to leave the score 3-1 and Town had to endure a few nervous minutes before the win was secured.

Paul Hurst reverted to the "A" team - minus Craig Clay - reversing most of the changes he made for the Bank Holiday defeat to Macclesfield. That meant Robinson continued in midfield alongside Craig Disley.

Town took a deserved early lead in bizarre circumstances when Scott Doe sliced an Arnold free kick into his own net. It was the slice of luck (literally) that Grimsby had been missing in recent games when they have conceded the opener against the run of play.

Grimsby then went on to miss a hatful of chances with Omar Bogle the chief culprit. Bogle almost turned provider when he crossed from the byline to Monkhouse whose backheel was cleared off the line. Amond missed a good chance as well in the first half when his header went over the bar. Amond then linked up with Bogle to provide the big striker with another good chance but he blasted over from close range.

Boreham Wood had a good spell and Town managed to survive a goalmouth scramble and broke with men spare. Arnold combined with Amond to set up Bogle who skied another glorious chance over the bar.

With Town fans getting restless having just a one goal lead to defend, it was with some relief that McKeown made a good save to deny Montgomery.

Omar Bogle finally scored when he was presented with the ball by Boreham Wood (not for the first time) and blasted it in from 20 yards. Arnold soon added a second and thoughts turned towards a first clean sheet with the points seemingly secure, but it was not to be as Charlie MacDonald got his head to the ball to nod in a far post cross.

McKeown kept Town's two goal lead intact with a fine save to deny MacDonald a second, and Town finally reached the full time whistle.

It was a comfortable win in the end and could have should have been much more emphatic a scoreline but it's a relief to get three points. Town have been the better side in all but one game this season but missed chances, conceded sloppy goals and had the occasional slice of misfortune which have cost them points so far. The lack of a clean sheet is still a worry though because it means Town are having to score two or three goals to win games, which is a big ask of any team on a regular basis.
