Town Do it the Hard Way

GRIMSBY'S game with Aldershot on Saturday followed a familiar script and a familiar scoreline: it was Grimsby's third 4-1 win of the season so far at Blundell Park. Town missed a hatful of chances in the first half, in which Aldershot opened the scoring with one of their few attacks.

After the break Town turned on the style, scoring four goals and even had the luxury of missing a penalty.

Paul Hurst elected for the same side that had won at Boreham Wood at the weekend, which meant Craig Clay once again started on the bench.

Grimsby dominated the first half hour with Bogle missing a good chance but it was Aldershot who drew first blood when Oliver picked out the completely unmarked Walker in the box who made no mistake with a volley from close range

Town went on to have the better of things, with Bogle having a shot cleared off the line just before half time, but the score remained 1-0 at the break.

A spell of Grimsby pressure in the first half resulted it a penalty when former Grimsby striker Richard Brodie hauled down Bogle in the box. The big Town striker took the penalty himself and sent the 'keeper the wrong way to level the score.

Brodie missed a chance to put the Shots back in front, but it was Town who scored the critical third goal thanks to a slip by one of their players which gave Robertson the space to get the ball across and it was played to Amond who sidefooted it in to put Grimsby in front.

The ref awarded another penalty and this time Bogle went the other way and the 'keeper saved it. But Bogle made amends when he put Town 3-1 up when Monkhouse set him up. Town had a bit of breathing space at last.

Then Bogle on a hattrick had a shot blocked by Thomas, but Arnold slotted in a rebound to complete a comfortable win.

3,869 supporters watched another entertaining game. The goals against column is still worrying because it means Grimsby are having to score 2 or more goals to win a game. They did it again today but it will start to get harder in the next few games when the standard of the opposition goes up a notch. Town face Chester, Tranmere and Wrexham in the next three games of the season, all of whom have had reasonable starts to the season and have aspirations - and in some cases expectations - of top five finishes.
