Five Star Grimsby

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/08/2016

GRIMSBY thrashed Stevenage 5-2 at Blundell Park this afternoon, with striker Omar Bogle the star of the show. The forward, who scored the opening two goals in the Wembley play-off final in May, had his best game for the Mariners, scoring three goals and setting up the other two.

It was a five star performance by Grimsby with the team really ticking going forward for the first time this season. The two goals conceded was the biggest worry with questions over James McKeown for both goals, as the defence continued to leak goals.

Paul Hurst made just one chance, bringing in winger Dominic Vose in place of James Berrett. After a fairly even start Bogle opened the scoring with a piece of individual brilliance, spinning 360 degrees in the box to give himself space and firing past Jones in the Stevenage goal.

McKeown kept Town in the game with a good save, before Bogle created the second with some neat footwork in the box then laying the ball into the path of Summerfield who drilled the ball into the net to give Town a 2-0 goal lead. It should have been 3-0 shortly afterwards when Town broke 3 on 2. Jackson passed the ball wide to Chambers whose cross-shot looped narrowly wide of the post.

Bogle conceded a soft free kick on the corner of the box in first half injury time, and the ball looped into the box leaving McKeown exposed on the far post. Franks headed back across the face of goal and into the empty net. The late goal put a real dampener on a first half in which the Mariners had been the better side, and made and taken chances for themselves.

After the break Town put daylight between themselves and Stevenage with two quick goals. Bogle played the ball out to Vose on the edge of the box who fired a thunderbolt past Jones and Town were in dreamland not long afterwards when Bogle added his second with a low shot.

Pearson made another mistake to give Stevenage a lifeline, trying to let the ball run out for a goal kick the defender misjudged it and allowed Pett to nip in and cross for a tap-in for McAnuff.

With the clock running down and the three points assured everyone was hoping that Bogle would grab his third and a chance came for the hat trick goal came when Grimsby were awarded a free kick on the right of the Pontoon box. Bogle stepped up and fired in into the top right hand corner to complete what must have been one of the best performances of his career.

Compared to now, the team has looked like a group of individuals until today's game. This was much more of a team performance with Bogle the dangerman, and Vose too making an excellent contribution.

The Mariners have a game in the FL Trophy in midweek at Walsall before the league season resumes with trips to Notts County and Luton in successive weekends, both of which should see large followings from the Mariners faithful, especially after this performance.
