Town Topple Leaders

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 20/11/2016

GRIMSBY ended Plymouth's unbeaten run with an emphatic 3-0 win at Home Park, which saw Marcus Bignot pick up his first win as Town boss. The Mariners defended superbly throughout and Omar Bogle followed up Collins's opener with a brace of his own.

Bignot stuck with the team that almost beat Barnet last weekend, which meant that Tom Bolarinwa started on the bench again. Grimsby started very strongly and were the better side for the opening part of the game. The first good chance fell to Plymouth though when Craig Tanner rounded McKeown but his shot from a narrow angle hit the side netting. McKeown made a good save to keep Town in the match, before Collins struck just before half time. Town won a corner which was initially cleared but the ball came back to Town and it was cross back in from the other side, where Collins rose to bundle the ball into the net in front of the vocal away support.

Grimsby came under immense pressure for long periods in the second half but it was Town who scored the second goal, which Collins once again prominent at a set piece. The Danny Andrew's free kick was headed down by Collins for Bogle to slot it in at close range.

Grimsby once again had to withstand lots of home pressure and then scored the third with a classic counterattack. Sub Bolarinwa broke on the right-hand side and was brought down inside the box. The ref played advantage instead of awarding a penalty and Bogle was on hand to stroke the ball in to ensure the three points were all going to Grimsby.

Town continued to defend resolutely for the closing minutes, determined as ever to keep a clean sheet. Although Bogle scored two and Collins was involved with two goals, it was the defensive efforts that really impressed. Town were impregnable with the back five, specially Gowling outstanding, and McKeown as excellent in Town's goal.
