Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Slade: Condemned Man
Slade: Condemned Man

The Vermen

Date: 14/01/2018

GRIMSBY lost their third successive home game to increase pressure on manager Russell Slade and make fans start to eye nervously the results of the teams below them. Town conceded early goals in both halves. Sub Jamille Matt managed to claw one back but then gave the Mariners a mountain to climb when he received a straight red in the 89th minute.

Loan signing Charles Vernam started the game alongside his namesake Scott Vernon. The Mariners looked lively in the opening 10 minutes and Vernon and Woolford has scoring opportunities. Newport though carved open the Town defence for the opener, with Amond picking out Willmott who made no mistake. Newport could have gone further ahead in the first half but for two goalline clearances.

After half-time Scott Vernon produced an excellent save from Day, but Newport broke and scored with a deflected goal which wrong-footed Kean. Newport has the game wrapped up and went into defensive mode. Grimsby did manage to scramble a goal from substitute Matt, despite looking well offside. The grand finale was somewhat ruined then when Matt was sent off for use of the elbow, for which he will received a three match ban.

Town have two tough games now, first away at Colchester and then against pace setters Luton at Blundell Park. It's hard to see many points accruing from those two games unless a managerial change is made. Town still have to play Barnet, Chesterfield and Forest Green who form a cluster of clubs at the bottom.
