Town Pick up a Point

GRIMSBY secured a valuable point in a 0-0 draw at Accrington Stanley, with both teams struggling to create significant chances. It was a big improvement on recent performances and saw Town create a rare clean sheet as well as being the better side for most of the game, especially the second half.
The Mariners made six changes from their last game, including three deadline day debutants - Liam Smith, Denver Hume, and Curtis Thompson. The first half saw Grimsby grow into the game after a nervous start where Cartwright was needed to make a save from Woods, and Nolan shot over the bar after dispossessing Grimsby in midfield. Grimsby settled down tough and started to keep the ball better, but failed to test Accrington's keeper, Radek Vitek, significantly. Town's best chance in the first 45 came from a spell of pressure that culminated with a deflected shot by Holohan that narrowly went wide, leading to a corner.
The second half continued in a similar vein, with Town looking for a breakthrough but unable to find the back of the net. They remained solid defensively, ensuring a clean sheet. Grimsby came closest to scoring late in the game when Vitek brilliantly saved a header from Rose, tipping the ball over the bar for a corner.
The match ended goalless, with Grimsby taking a point back home. In front of the back four, Thompson was the stand-out of the new players. Both new full-backs looked very comfortable in their new roles and overall the side looked a big improvement with less obvious weaknesses. The lack of a cutting edge was the obvious area to improve on, but getting back to not conceding as regularly as the side has been, allows them to pick up more points in lower scoring contests.
