Mariners defender Peter Handyside will start for the reserves this afternoon against Shrewsbury Town at Blundell Park. The former Scotland Under-21 star is ready to take his place in a side that will also feature regular first-team squad members Michael Jeffrey and David Smith.

After suffering through illness, the big centre-half is turning out for the reserves in a bid to regain full match fitness. Also amongst the reserve team set to play this afternoon are several youth trialists, as coach Paul Wilkinson scours the league, looking to bring fresh new talent to the Town.

Chris Boulder and Graham Hockless arrived across the Humber from Hull City, and centre-back Pearce Wright from QPR is also included in the squad.

Meanwhile, New Zealand international goalkeeper Jason Batty, who is currently training at Blundell Park, has caught the eye of Scunthorpe manager Brian Laws. It is expected that the big Kiwi will keep goal for the Iron at Wrexham in a reserve game tonight.

Grimsby Town (from); Croudson, Ward, Bloomer, Handyside, Wright, Chapman, Boulder, Buckley, Smith, Hockless, Jeffrey, Rowan, White, Manasaram, Butterwood, Moran, Lawrence, Smithson, Pounder, Shinn.
