Town's Young Players Called To The Battle!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 04/01/2003

PAUL Groves has no option but to play his youngsters in Town's clash with Burnley on Saturday with Digger Soames pairing up front with Darren Mansaram. Chris Bolder or Iain Ward are also in the picture.

With Stacy Coldicott in doubt and Tony Gallimore fit there are only 8 professionals available. The big surprise is Groves looking to Terry Cooke who is definitely out of favour with Groves despite statements to the contrary.

Groves told the Grimsby Telegraph; "There are going to be big opportunities for a few players to stake a claim for a shirt. It's up to them to take it. If Cookey gets the chance it's up to him. We've said all along that players will get an opportunity to do the business."

"Peter Taylor summed it up perfectly for me the other day. He left a player out and somebody called up the local radio station and said that so-and-so would have got a hat-trick. Taylor said that they're always the best players when they're out of the team."

"This is a big chance for players."

"We've been playing well at home and the results have been good. It's a good game for us and I can't wait. There's nothing to lose and the games that we've played against Burnley have been entertaining and there have been goals too."

"We've won the two games we've played against them at home and I want a hat-trick. Financially it's an important game to us and I'll take beating them 6-5 again. We'll go for it and I hope it's an exciting game for the fans, plenty of goals, and a win for us."
