CLUB captain Justin Whittle is being released in the summer when his contract comes to an end. The 37-year-old has had limited chances to play this season, after three years of regular first team duties.

Town boss Alan Buckley explained to the Grimsby Telegraph: "Justin will be leaving when his contract runs out in the summer. He has been a fantastic player and ambassador for the club, on and off the field.

"It's merely a fact of his age and the capacity to recover after training and matches."

Whittle, who joined Town in the summer of 2004, when ex-Town boss Russell Slade signed him from Hull City, has made over 130 appearances for the Mariners. Last season the Derby-born defender was the Player of the Season, and the Fishy's readers also voted for him as their choice to win this site's award.

Meanwhile, striker Danny North's contract has been extended to the end of the 2009-2010 season after making 30 first team starts from the Mariners, which invoked an extension clause in his existing deal.
