Grimsby v Shrewsbury Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 12/12/2008

NOW becoming accustomed to their shiny new home, a little bit of cash in their back pocket, and a team performing well sitting second behind leaders Wycombe who they destroyed 7-0 in the Paint Pot back in October. It's all a million miles away from the tough days back at idyllic if slightly run down Gay Meadow.

The Opposition

Overview

Their home form is nothing more than awe inspiring, their one defeat at home coming against last week's conquerors of all things black and white Port Vale and that was a last minute goal. Alas away from Shrewsbury the Shrews have only 3 points more then ourselves, then again they have an away score of -1 while we have one of -14. Let's just take the positives eh? Last year the blokes from Shropshire finished a lowly 19th and whatever way you look at it that was crap not just counting this year's current success. The year prior they were fighting it out in the play-off finals but we will let them count it as a Wembley hangover. THIS DOES NOT COUNT FOR US IT WAS HARDLY FOR LEAGUE STATUS! Since their defeat at Blyth Spartans "snigger" in the FA Cup Shrewsbury are undefeated two draws away from home, one against the red and white of those lot who get drunk at the Bradford and against those who cheered when Lester scored a cheating goal during midweek. While they won both home games against Dags and Red and Rotherham. One of the biggest worries of playing Shrewsbury this season is not only been outplayed and beaten but also to be on the end of these monumental hammerings they dish out almost at random so far they have beaten Macclesfield 4-0, Gillingham 7-0, Wycombe 7-0 and Dag Red 5-0! Which equates to nearly the double the amount of goals we have scored all season in the league!

The Team
Paul Simpson (left) manager, leader and all right good guy made his mark at Carlisle where he took them for their usual boring season of last gasp winners to secure league status to been actually half decent and getting them promoted as champions then buggered off to Preston because they have a museum if the games are crap. Well you can only go round a museum so many times before you begin to tire even the Guggenheim gets a tad boring on the 16th visit so he's back in League Two with Shrewsbury because he's head of that PGL place up the road at Boreattton Park where he can go abseiling, quad biking and so on. Since his arrival in the summer Simpson well he's made them fairly good in the summer. He dragged in something, something Sherriff from Tranmere, some fella from Rotherham and former Forest hardman and goalscorer Grant Holt who had been persuaded by other bigger and brighter than the Shropshire lot which shows the club is defiantly going places.

One to Watch
Ben Davies. Though a lot of the media hype and fan pressure arrives on Holt's door is warranted being top goal scorer with 10 already his partner Ben Davies is quietly keeping pace with the former Trent End hero. Eight already to his name this season Davies has settled well since his arrival back in 2006. Starting out as a trainee at Walsall the brummy forward went on to fellow West Midlander's Kidderminster Harriers not scoring even once in his 13 appearances during his 2 year spell at the club. He left in 2002 for Chester where he has spent the majority of his career so far but it's at Shrewsbury where he is making his name. Since his arrival he has reached his 30th goal in under 90 appearances for The Shrews and as many of our defenders will be concentrating on Holt's movement it could leave space and time for Davies to add his ninth of the season.
