Grimsby v Luton Preview

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/09/2010

GRIMSBY and Luton face one another live at Blundell Park, and also on the most obscure TV channel in Britain. Nestled between Gaelic Football and Australian Rugby League the Mariners take on the Hatters in the opening BSP match on Premium Sports TV. It's probably easier to attend in person than to take out a subscription, so why not go along?

As we're not allowed to kick off at 3pm and be shown live on TV because had they done so attendances up and down the country would have plummeted as the nation tuned in to watch our grudge match with Luton, the fixture has been changed to a cosy "tea time" kick off of 17:15. Depending on your viewpoint that's either more drinking time or the Mrs will have to be instructed to serve tea late. Or both.

Grimsby Team News

Sheffield Wednesday reserve 'keeper Richard O'Donnell has joined Grimsby on a month's loan. O'Donnell is almost certain to play as he's the only able-bodied adult 'keeper at Blundell Park.

Town have injury doubts over defenders Ridley, Bore and Atkinson. Charles Ademeno is out for a couple of months.

Luton Team News

Striker Tom Craddock has signed for Oxford. He scored 24 goals last season, and had already got 3 this campaign.

A possible replacement is Kenyan striker Taiwo Atieno who has signed from Rochester Rhinos. He recently made his international debut against Mozambique, and the London-born frontman has also played league football in Puerto Rico.

Luton Last Season

The Hatters were relegated in 2008-2009 due to a 30-point penalty. Grimsby should really have gone down that season, but were given a get out of jail card by Luton's transgressions in the previous seasons. While we were making a total mess of the chance we had been given, Luton were gradually getting accustomed to non-league football. They started well but after an indifferent middle part to the season (not helped by a decent FA Cup run), Luton had to settle for a place in the play-offs despite a late charge (6-0 and 8-0 home wins over Hayes and Grays included!). Everyone was expecting a Luton v Oxford play-off final, but York were party poopers winning both legs 1-0, and Luton had to console themselves that at least justice was done and Grimsby had been relegated at the second time of asking.

Luton This Season

The Hatters won the first three games, but have failed to win the last three. They lost at Tamworth but managed to salvage a draw at home to Hayes (remember them) after going a goal behind.

Prediction

Town to concede the first goal, but fight back and get a creditable draw.

Grimsby 1 Luton 1
