Town Claim First Point

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 21/08/2011

GRIMSBY claimed their first point of the season with a 0-0 draw at Newport County on Saturday. But they needed a slice of Lady Luck after Kempson conceded a penalty and was sent off. McKeown saved the ensuing spot kick and Town held on for the final 15 minutes with ten men.

Newport had dominated the first half but were unable to convert their possession into goals, with McKeown being called upon to make two good saves from Rose.

Town had a chance to score just before half time against the run of play (as Braintree did on Tuesday, transforming the fixture) but Duffy pulled the ball wide when well placed.

Grimsby, who played a 4-3-3 formation during the whole game, came more into the game in the second half and were more of an attacking threat. Their best chance came when Elding just failed to get on the end of a cross from Artus which flashed across goal.

Town managed to negotiate a nervous 12 minutes, plus stoppage time.

On the plus side Town got their first point, but they are still bottom - their lowest ever position. On the minus side Grimsby still haven't scored but Hearn (ankle) was forced off, and Kempson will now receive a three match ban.

The Mariners have a good chance to grab their first goal and win against Cambridge at Blundell Park on Tuesday night.
