Bignot Rescues Point

By: Rob Sedgwick

TOWN had to call on Paul Bignot's late equaliser to rescue a point against Gateshead in a game the Mariners created enough chances to win but nearly lost. Clayton McDonald had given Town an early lead when he headed in Neilson's cross from close range.

However not long after the opener the Tynesiders equalised from a controversial penalty given when Aswad Thomas brought down Marcus Maddison. Colin Larkin beat McKeown from 12 yards, and after the break Gateshead turned the game around when Marcus Maddison struck when a free kick came out to him on the edge of the area.

Grimsby had chances to level but left it late, needing Bignot to nod in a Rodman cross.

Town rise to fifth place but are still a point below Gateshead, albeit with 4 games in hand. The Mariners have won just 2 of the last 6 games now, with 3 draws and 1 defeat meaning they are beginning to lose ground on leaders Luton who have 16 points from the last 18.
