Calamity at Crewe

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/02/2017

GRIMSBY were thrashed 5-0 at Crewe in a severe blow to their pride and a result which raises question marks about the selection, formation and tactics of the new manager. The Mariners fell a goal down very quickly Cooper received a ball inside the box and squeezed it past James McKeown from a narrow angle.

Crewe raced into a 2-0 lead when Chris Dagnall smashed in a second after the ball was allowed to bounced unchallenged in the box. Dagnell was then fouled and Cooper curled in a free kick to beat McKeown on his near post for a third. Dagnall then had a tap-in for his second goal and Crewe's fourth after a ball was played into the box and completely ignored by anyone with a Grimsby shirt on.

Dagnell could have had his hat trick just before the break but the Town defence managed to clear the ball off the line.

Town improved marginally after the break but created very little and it was Crewe who extended their lead with 3 minutes to go after Ainley cut the ball back to Callum Cooke for a finish just outside the box.

Town have to make changes for the midweek game with Newport. The Mariners have 40 points so don't have to worry at the moment about relegation. However if performances don't improve points are going to be very hard to come by. Grimsby are conceding too many goals and scoring far too few, not an ideal recipe to pick up points.
