Where will Grimsby be next season?

Ten Man Town Beaten Again

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 26/08/2017

GRIMSBY slumped to their fourth successive defeat and continued the bizarre statistic of having a player sent off in every game when Collins was shown a second yellow card early in the second half when the score was 2-1 to Wycombe.

Town had fallen 2-0 down in the first half, but pulled one back early in the second, before Collins made the task doubly as hard. The Mariners did though level the game after a wonder strike by Hooper, but Akinfenwa sealed the points for the visitors with 14 minutes to go.

Grimsby started brightly with Dembele and Hooper but looking sharp in the early stages. However Wycombe scored with their first serious attempt after 30 minutes when Akinfenwa was allowed to turn in the box to fire the ball home. Town conceded a penalty late in the first half when the ref spotted a Town hand touch the ball in the air. Jacobsen put Wycombe 2-0 in front which was the half time score.

Town were given a lifeline in the second half when Town were awarded a penalty for a foul in the box which Mitch Rose scored from. Collins had been booked in the first half and was shown his second yellow for a clumsy challenge on 58 minutes. Osborne came on for Bolarinwa and Town started to look more threatening, with Jaiyesimia also prominent following his half time introduction for Kelly. Hooper levelled the game with a wonderful long-range strike on 65 and Mission Impossible suddenly looked on.

However, Akinfenwa's power saw him drive a header in from close range, with claims for a foul in the build-up.

The performance was better than at Stevenage with Town at least putting up a fight, and with eleven men on the pitch, they might have got something from this game. The side the finished the game, plus an extra defender to replace Collins was certainly an improvement on the one that started it.

Grimsby have to improve upon their appalling disciplinary record. It's costing them points in games and it's also disrupting the team. The side still look a long way short of play-off contenders and if anything signings are required just to pull away from the danger zone.
