Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Blunt Town fall to Wealdstone

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 27/10/2021

GRIMSBY'S lack of forward options was exposed last night in a disappointing defeat at Wealdstone. The Mariners were without Ryan Taylor again, and John-Lewis was forced to deputise. John McAtee started but didn't look fit and limped off early in the second half.

Two other key players were missing as Giles Coke replaced Alex Hunt and Erico Sousa came in for Harry Clifton.

Town conceded an early penalty when Waterfall was deemed to have fouled Matt Buse, although any contact looked minimal. There was a long delay taking the kick and Umerah's low spot-kick was saved by McKeown.

Town's best chance of the first half came from a Sousa cross which McAtee struck fiercely, Wickens parried, and the ball was cleared for a corner.

Wealdstone's goal came from a corner that was half cleared but only came out to Buse, who drilled a low shot past McKeown.

Grimsby had plenty of possession but failed to create much, with Lohn-Lewis struggling to hold the ball up and the central midfield lacking creativity.

After McAtee was replaced by Wright early in the second half Town had the bulk of play, but struggled to find their rhythm. The Mariners came closest from a free-kick when a Waterfall header beat the keeper but was cleared off the line.

Wealdstone wasted time at every opportunity with their keeper seeing a lot of the ball and wasting time with impunity. He was eventually booked but in the dying embers of the game, and no time was allowed for all the minutes he had eaten up.

Town were completely unable to muster any opportunities in open play, and their lack of options was worrying. They may have one of the strongest XIs in the division, but the lack of depth with only a handful of key players out has to be a concern.
