Playing before a crowd of more than 2,500, many of who were Town Fans, the Mariners although hit by an early penalty courtesy of Paul Raven, overcame their third division opponents and put on an encouraging display of football and scoring goals!!

Phil Jevons, Town's new striker opened the scoring, with a forceful goal from outside the box which the Scunthorpe keeper had no chance of stopping. The Grimsby contingent in the crowd were delighted to see Jevons scoring and he received a great ovation from the crowd.

Almost on half time, Michael Jeffrey rattled in another goal for the Mariners, which appeared to please Manager Lawrence who applauded him and congratulated him as he left the field at half time.

David Smith made room for himself half way through the second half and scored a tremendous long-range goal that brought the crowd to its feet. Town fans were by this time in full voice and towards the end of the game Wayne Burnett pushed forward and scored a well placed goal to finish off the "Iron Men"

".…Jeffrey's best game since I have been at club…."

General opinion among the crowd was the Man of The Match was Michael Jeffrey who was everywhere and deserved to be among the goal scorers. There was some concern over Paul Raven who left the field limping but it is believed that his injury it is not too serious.

Mariners Net in their report of the game said "Manager Lawrence was full of praise for his players after the game, with the Town boss praising the performance of Michael Jeffrey 'I think that is Michael Jeffrey's best game since I've been at the club' ".

Lennie also praised Phil Jevons for his performance after the former Everton striker had fired the Mariners into the lead on 12 minutes. "Jevons was a one goal every two games man in Everton reserves and if he brings that here it will be fantastic Lennie declared, he reacted instinctively, never hesitated and finished very well" said Lennie. News on the Paul Raven injury, Lennie speaking after the game said: Paul has 'jarred' his ankle but should be OK to face Huddersfield on Friday night."
