Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Preston Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 27/12/2001

TOWN lined up in a defensive 5-3-2 formation. As the game wore on, we noticed that it was more like a 6-2-0-0-2 formation.... the front two receiving no support from the wingbacks and very little from the midfield trio. It was evident that the strategy was to be play-for-a-point.

Home > 2001-2002 Season > Report Cards > Preston(a)

Coyne Surely the man of the match. Save followed save followed save followed save. The nearest he came to being beaten was by a deflection off Ford that trickled centimetres wide.

Grade: A-

Neilson Started nervously, but grew in confidence. Obviously not a proper wing back as such. Carried out his defensive duties adequately, nothing more.

Grade: C+

Chapman Did very little wrong. Ventured forward occasionally, and was solid.

Grade: B-

Gallimore: Had a pretty good first half. Refused to be pulled out of position when Preston overloaded the left side.

Grade: B-

Groves: Disappointing. As captain would be expected to lead the 3 centre backs. As a ex-midfielder, would be expected to venture forward. Did neither. Looked nervous and short of confidence and wasted possession in dangerous areas.

Grade: C-

Ford Looked promising, but had a few edgy moments. Should be happy with his full debut.

Grade: C

Butterfield Inconsistent. Almost too casual in his passing. Sometimes he was neat and well positioned, but his tackles were weak and did not give Neilson any real assistance.

Grade: C-

Willems A strange performance - he attacked more than the other non-strikers, but he let Butterfield take most set pieces, and did not seem bothered about Chapman being outnumbered time after time.

Grade: C+

Burnett This was Wayne's chance to get a run in the team. But too often he gave away the ball and sat far too deep. Like Groves, he is an experienced player in a young team, but seems not to help them out... The obvious choice to be taken off

Grade: D

C.Thompson Looked skilful, worked hard and never gave up. Missed a good chance by shooting with his right when it was on his left. Was then unfortunate victim of dodgy off-the-ball incident and had to be subbed, just as Jevons was tiring. Hopefully not badly injured....

Grade: B+

Jevons: Pretty good in the first half, but exhausted in the 2nd. Was very poor in the 10mins before being taken off.

Grade: C-

Subs:

Coldicott, Jeffrey and Boulding:

All 3 made a difference. Boulding had a handful of breaks, and managed to shoot wide, over-elaborate or shoot at the keeper. Jeffrey made a great run to catch up with one of these breaks, but Boulding just ignored him. Jeffrey also hit side netting late on!! Coldicott was everything Burnett had not been; bustling, busy, physical, and attacking.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
