The Ray Lucas Column: Is Groves Mr Right?

By: Ray Lucas
Date: 28/12/2001

IN A PREVIOUS COLUMN, I stated that if Lennie was relieved of his duties as manager, Paul Groves should be given the option of taking the job. Imagine my shock this morning when I heard that Paul Groves was given the job?!

In my humble opinion, Paul Groves is not the man who should be charged with guiding the Mariners out of the perilous waters of the Division One maelstrom. Don't get me wrong, Grovesie is a great player, but has no managerial experience.

What we need is a man with experience of being in this sort of situation. Hull boss Brian Little springs to mind. He has taken Hull, a relatively unspectacular side, to the brink of promotion from Division 3. Not a big achievement you might think, but he's done it with little money.

Instead, we get a player who has come to the crossroads of his career. And a coach who doesn't do what it says on the tin. If Grovesie can guide us to safety, I will be the first man jumping up and down. But sadly, I cannot see the Mariners pulling off "the great escape" this time. Maybe Grovesie should have an experienced man by his side.

I firmly believe Lennie should have stayed. But another man who could have filled the void is Dave "Harry" Bassett. Unfortunately, his brief is to keep Leicester among the big boys of the Premiership. Like Lennie himself said, no-one wants to come to Town.

What about Andy Kilner, the ex-Stockport gaffer booted out in favour of gangly Carlton Palmer. Like Grovesie no experience. What sort of decision is that to make. The man has no tactical knowledge, and I fear a return to the negative days of Mr Buckley.

Sadly, I think that the appoint of Paul will not be the incentive we need to stay up. Maybe Brian Laws would like to come back after achieving some moderate success at Scunthorpe.

Whatever happens, maybe the appointment of Mr Groves will make or break our season.

I just hope we don't regret the appointment.
