DR FISHY has compiled match statistics and a report card for the Grimsby Town side that beat Stockport 3-1 on Tuesday at Blundell Park in a night of high drama.

Coyne: Once again he had very little to do and had no chance with Stockport's goal. The defence in front of him stood firm and so his grade is judged on his anticipation, catching, holding and kicking of the ball. All were very good.

Grade: B-

McDermott: First half he looked his usual self, bursting forward down the wing and keeping attacks going. Second half he wasn't quite himself, as he made about two little uncharacteristic mistakes. Not often that he gives the ball away!

Grade: C+

Smith: I think this was his first start for Town since the heavy 5-0 defeat at Palace early in the season. While Town were good (opening 25 minutes) he was good, but like the team in the second half, he didn't appear all that much and went quiet.

Grade: C+

Groves: His performance at the back must have given the rest of the team some confidence as he led by example. He nodded home a goal from a corner and battled away in the second half to give Stockport very little chance of working Coyne.

Grade: B

Todd: This must have to be the most solid partnership at the back since Beharall left the club. Todd once again showed his Premiership qualities in his reading of the game and the distribution of the ball. He also grabbed a goal, and it was well taken too.

Grade: B-

Butterfield: Gave away the ball a few times on the night, once it cost a goal. However, in the opening exchanges he was actively involved and was played into space. Got another assist from the opening goal but he petered out as the game went on.

Grade: C-

Campbell: Again, he was the other wide player to be played into some space down the wing. He had one or two little openings but kept falling over. I can't put my finger on what has changed from last season, but this he seems to disappear all the time.

Grade: C

Pouton: The 'all-action' display was again apparent last night, he injured a player (unintentionally, may I add) when he steamed in to shoot from outside the box but after Pringle was taken off he also went quiet as if the job had been done.

Grade: C+

Burnett: Another average performance, however he never gave the ball away as much as he usually does. Come to think of it, I can't remember one midfielder doing anything of note after about 51 minutes. Can't really say Burnett had a bad game.

Grade: C

Pringle: Top class performance, and I get the feeling he wasn't really fully-match fit. His awareness, skill on the ball and passing were all top notch, and he used his pace to good effect. Great ball control and strength to set up the third goal.

Grade: B

Allen: Seemed at home playing off Pringle and new his job exactly. Off the ball he was as good as ever, and if these two strikers were left on the pitch for the full 90 minutes they would have destroyed County. Grabbed a much-needed goal as well.

Grade: B-

SUBS

Boulding: Had one great chance to score but the keeper saved his effort, and on two other occasions he ran to the edge of the box before unleashing his trademark back-pass to the opposite keeper, except one went very wide.

Grade: C+

Ford: Came on too late to grade, but immediately controlled the back line by pushing defenders away from the goal and soaking up the pressure. This lad better have a new contract soon.

Best part of Town's performance: The attacking play, without a shadow of doubt. Despite being bottom of the table and looking very poor indeed, Stockport probably had more of the ball than us, and that includes the whole of the first half. But when Town won possession back we looked like we would create something, and we kept on doing so, until Pringle left the field.

Areas for improvement: Groves now has to think ahead and ponder over what the strike force will be against Palace at the weekend. The injury to Pringle has been considered as the Blundell Park curse, but with Pringle on the pitch we'd be more than a match for any team in this division - they way we're playing. Now we'll be without a big man up front (yet again) and it might have to be Allen and Boulding. All we have to do now is keep up the good work going forward.

Entertainment scale: It's a pity that we can't enjoy the win as much as we would like to because of the injury to Pringle, but it was still a win. Let's not get carried away (and I'm not Paul Groves in disguise) but it was against a very poor side. Still, it gave us much to cheer about on the night and a win is always welcome!

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
