Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Watford Report Card

By: Dr Fishy
Date: 13/10/2002

DESPITE a good performance from the lads, they frustratingly went down 2-0 at the hands of Watford. No detentions for this week, I don't think, as they've proved they can play and can compete.

Home > 2002-2003 Season > Report Cards > Watford (a)

Coyne: Made one good save/block in the second half but other than that he wasn't really stretched although it looked like he was going to be called into action on more occasions. His kicking was a bit dubious at times.

Grade: C

Ward: He looks more of an accomplished full back now, and after the Ipswich game his confidence must be high. Had trouble clearing the ball, could perhaps had shown a bit more strength for Watford's second goal but played intelligent balls forward.

Grade: C+

Barnard: Never looks happy when he plays. Defensively he made few tackles but blocked more than anything. Going forward he played as a left winger and hugged the touchline but had few chances to deliver.

Grade: C

Raven: Taken off after about three minutes. Not sure why - obviously an injury of some sort - but he didn't appear to pull up and looked a bit shocked when his number came up on the board.

Ford: He is showing more composure on the ball and more all-round awareness of the game. Like Ward, he appears to have trouble volleying the ball to safety and struggled a bit in the air.

Grade: C+

Cooke: Very quiet game for the little winger. Spent most of the time covering at the back and winning the ball in midfield. Like Barnard, he didn't get many chances to cross, only from set pieces.

Grade: C

Campbell: Had a decent game but doesn't look strong enough at times. Bizarrely the referee looked to book him for taking a free kick, but ended up booking Pouton instead. Campbell doesn't look so knackered after 20 minutes now.

Grade: C

Santos: Was immense in every sense of the word. Strong, physical, aggressive and all the rest of similar terms were attached to his display at Watford. Distribution was inconsistent but some of the tackles he made cancelled out some negatives.

Grade: B

Pouton: He appears to be regaining his good form. We saw a few driving, purposeful runs through the heart of Watford's midfield, and was also an attacking threat at times. Moved to the left quite a bit, don't know whether that was planned.

Grade: B-

Kabba: Should have won one penalty and won more free kicks. As soon as he touched the ball the referee or linesman seemed to dream up an excuse to give a free kick the other way. Did most of our attacking work, but we seem to be relying on him a bit too much.

Grade: B-

Mansaram: He is getting stronger with every match. Held off the Watford players very well, sometimes he found himself surrounded by three or four men. Played with his back to goal, almost in the Bradley Allen role of last season.

Grade: C+

SUBS

Coldicott: Practically played the full match, and generally did okay. The Crab, as he has affectionately become to be known, almost suffered a nosebleed when a chance arose to shoot - and he did, but it just went wide.

Grade: C

Livingstone: Came on for the last 20 minutes, was very quiet and had very few touches of the ball.

Grade: C-

Robinson: Came on too late to grade, but I like his style. He looks strong and full of running.

Overall Verdict: No Grimsby player had a bad game. The youngsters are still finding their feet but are adjusting very well considering the circumstances. Our plan was much the same as it was against Ipswich; get the ball down and play it forward into the spaces behind the defence for Kabba to run on to. May not have worked as well as it did in midweek, but we had plenty of possession and frustrated the home side. With refereeing decisions on our side (two in particular) we could have got something from the game.

Grade Guide

A*This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off.
AThis is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match.
A-The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc.
B+The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes.
BThis can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes.
B-The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game.
C+A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score.
CAn average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance.
C-Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match.
D+Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game.
DThis player shouldn't be playing in the near future.
D-The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance
EThe player should be sacked
F And then shot
