Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Where Do We Go From Here?

By: Steff Keightley
Date: 08/03/2003

SEEING as we are likely to loose nearly £1M IF we are relegated, why can't we engage in talks with our out of contract players, offer them silly money, i.e. Division 1 wages. Or even sign Premiership players, on Premiership wages, and then just sit back and wait.

Screams of derision and yells of shock I hear from the MB faithful, getting their knives out, ready to sink them deep into my soft, large, fleshy underbelly. Just bear with me, and all shall become clear, eventually.

Several teams local to me have just recently been in administration, and have come out of the awful smelly mire, casting an aroma of roses in all directions.

These teams are now on a stronger footing than they have been on for a while, relegation from the Premiership, a stupidly huge wage bill, new Stadia’s and up to the eyeballs in debt, but are still allowed to play their top earners, who lets face it are still world class players, a certain overhead kick seen recently at BP should give you an idea, as well as Livvo’s serious concussion. Know whom I am talking about yet?

Surely if these players are then transfer listed, they should remain on the list and not be allowed to play for the team, or even forced onto the list by the Football League, until such time as they are out of Administration.

It has been released that one of these teams, recently out of administration, only, yes only, has to pay back 10 pence in the £1. For them this is a god send, out of £32M (alleged) worth of debt, they only have to pay back £3.2M, with no hint of retribution from the Football League, remember Aldershot, and Swindon, Financial irregularities, and dismissal from the league and relegation respectively, so from what we here it is now fair to go into administration, and not be kicked out of the league, relegated or even, at least have points docked? Surely going into Administration is through financial miss-management, or financial irregularities.

The question stands as this, if it had not been either of these other 2 teams going into Administration, but Grimsby Town, what would the Football League have done? That we will never know, as the Board are trying to keep the clubs head above water and we will not allow us into that situation.
