Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Disaster At Blundell Park!

By: Mertle
Date: 23/05/2003

IT was revealed in the Grimsby Evening Telegraph, if they have got their facts right, that Town are going to make a major operational mistake. It was announced that everyone will have to take a pay cut, logical on first team squad players who earn thousands a week.

However it was also pointed out that even youth players will have to take a pay cut on their measly £200 wage.

Now if the club do not equal their existing contract they will be free agents to talk and move to other clubs despite their youthful age.

The club will then get nothing for all the effort put in by the coaches over the years and instantly horrible thoughts spring to mind like the Butterfield fiasco.

In that case the club was likely to have saved nearly a thousand pounds, but this time the saving would be measly in comparison. Whoever has made this bright spark idea is a complete and utter idiot. The youngsters are our future and with the right coaching can gain the club much needed finances if they show the right promise and fulfil there potential.

I accept that if the youngsters do not look good enough and show signs that they will not make the grade and get released, then that is a football decision. However I do not accept that we should possibly lose promising youth players for an operational decision, which is likely to save the club a pittance.

I would gladly have the club announce there's no war chest to bring in new players if it means saving the club's long-term future and its youth system.
