Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Brighton 3 Grimsby 0

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/10/2003

TWO minutes of madness at the start of the second half saw Grimsby concede two soft goals, and eventually end up losing 3-0 at League leaders Brighton. Town had held their own in a goalless first half, which saw chances fall to both sides, but never looked like scoring once they were behind.

Town lined up with Jason Crowe at left back, replacing Darren Barnard who was on international duty for Wales. Iain Anderson started on the right hand side of midfield in Crowe's position. Otherwise Grimsby were unchanged, and lined up in a 4-4-2 formation as follows: Davison; McDermott, Crane, Edwards, Crowe; Anderson, Daws, Hamilton, Campbell; Onuora, Boulding. Jevons, Bolder, Young, Hockless and Soames were on the bench.

After an opening first twenty minutes with few clear-cut goalscoring opportunities Town's best chance of the game fell to Tony Crane, whose close-range header from a free kick forced Kuipers to make a superb diving save to claw the ball around the post.

Two minutes later Iffy Onuora, who caused the Brighton defence problems throughout the first half, headed the ball over, just after Brighton's Leon Knight had done the same at the other end.

Other than that there were few chances in a generally lacklustre first half in which Town were generally content to contain Brighton and cause a few problems at the other end from set pieces.

That was to change at the start of the second half when, from a quickly taken corner, on-loan Fulham midfielder Zesh Rehman found himself umarked and scored with a deflected shot - a soft goal to concede. Two minutes later Lean Knight's shot was saved by Aidan Davison, but fell straight back to him for an easy finish.

Town huffed and puffed after the sucker punch but never in truth really looked like scoring. Paul Groves, who had four attacking players on the bench, chose not to use any of them until there were only 17 minutes left, when David Soames came on in place of Iain Anderson.

With the introduction of Soames, Town did create a few good attacking moves, one of which Onuora should have scored from, but the on-loan Blade couldn't keep the ball down.

In the dying seconds substitute Greg Young conceded a penalty, which was duly dispatched, and the whistle blew almost immediately afterwards. Although the scoreline flattered Brighton, Town created too few chances in the game to have deserved to have taken anything from the League leaders.
