Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

Another Step Forward!

THE Grimsby Telegraph, on Wednesday, reported on Town's players visiting the factory of their major sponsor, Young's Bluecrest Seafoods, to see the Mariners Pie being produced.

This was an intelligent and brilliant move by the club and one hopes it was not a "one off" and will continue.

This was the way that Lawrie McMenemy won the hearts of the Grimsby people and brought the crowds flocking to Blundell Park.

We are already looking at increased attendance figures this season with the good results we have been getting but we still have a long way to go.

By taking the players to see the supporters in their workplace, the aim is to cement the bond that is already there, win new converts and rekindle the interest of lapsed supporters.

It also has a lasting impression on the players too. Some of them have never been in the general workforce and they can see how hard their supporters work for the money they pay to see them play.

This was clearly evident when John McDermott said; "It's been really interesting. I didn't realise before how much produce they make here and we didn't realise how hard the production operators work - long hours, noisy conditions. You have to really admire them for the work they do."

When McMenemy undertook this programme of visits, it brought the feeling in the community that this was their club and that feeling and response has been sadly lacking this last few years.

Chairman John Fenty is setting an example by joining the fans and talking to them, at away games in particular. This helps to bring supporters closer to the club and get rid of the 'us and them' attitude.

Well done Grimsby Town Football Club! This is a very positive step forward and it will, in the end, bring its own rewards.

Long may it continue!
