Question of the Week

Who will go down?

Shrewsbury Preview

By: Richard Hubbert
Date: 11/02/2005

THE Mariners will be hoping to get their home form back on track following two successive home losses, against a Shrewbury side hovering near the bottom of the table.

The Opposition

Overview
The Gay Meadow side have changed their manager since they met Town back in October - in fact, the game against Town was Jimmy Quinn’s last as the Shrews manager. He was replaced by former Preston manager Gary Peters (left) in November and although hasn’t pulled up too many trees, has successfully navigated the club away from the drop zone. Their draw with Bury earlier in the week saw them move 8 points from the relegation places.

Their Squad
Scott Howie (left) is an experienced goalkeeper, formerly of Bristol Rovers and Reading, who joined the club in the summer on a free transfer. He is supported by defender Darren Tilson and Dave Ridler, who were both team mates at Macclesfield Town. A major coup in the summer was the return of centre back Dave Walton who had a spell with the club between 1993 and 1997 before stays at Crewe and Derby. In midfield is long serving winger Sam Aiston, who was signed for £50,000 from Sunderland in 1999. An unpredictable midfielder, Aiston can cause problems for any side at this level. In attack is Luke Rodgers, has constantly hit 15 goals or more a season, for the past three. However, this year is proving a difficult one for the Birmingham born striker, with just 4 goals in 29 appearances. Rodgers has not scored since the end of September and Town will want to make sure that doesn’t change.

Key Player
Duane Darby (left). Former Hull and Rushden hit man who has lots of experience at this level. Not been a regular this season but has recently come into the side and scored last weekend in their 4-1 win over Orient. Struggling to be fit for this game, but the Shrews will hope to have the determination and enthusiasm of Darby in attack.

Team News

TownShrewsbury
  • Justin Whittle and Stacy Coldicott are both suspended after picking up five bookings this season. Coldicott has been starting in midfield in the past few games, but it is likely that Terry Fleming will revert to the centre with Graham Hockless possibly getting a rare outing on the right of midfield.

  • Jason Crowe is still not fit so remains sidelined

  • Ronnie Bull makes a welcome return from suspension and could also play in midfield, with Parkinson switching to the right. However, with injuries at the back and Simon Ramsden playing out of position at left back, Bull will probably play there.

  • Rob Jones has been struggling with a back injury of late and has not been able to train very much. This could well mean that Ramsden starts with Forbes in a back four in defence. Alternatively, Tony Crane could make his first start of the season if Slade decides to continue with Ramsden at full back.

  • Up front, Martin Gritton has an ankle problem so could sit out, for the first time since his arrival on Christmas Eve. If Gritton fails to make it, Andy Parkinson could be moved in attack or youngster Danny North could get his first start for the club. There had been reports that Tony Crane could play in attack, but these rumours have been denied.
  • James Tolley will return to the Shrews squad after being on duty with Wales under 21’s.

  • Veteran midfielder Martyn O’Connor, who nearly moved to the Mariners in 1996, but opted for Birmingham, is back for Shrewbury after recently completing a 2 match suspension.

  • Ryan Lowe has been the subject of a "laughable" bid from Chester this week, so will stay in the Shrews squad for the time being.

  • Darren Tinson is very doubtful after coming off injured at Bury during the week, and to a lesser extent, so is Duane Darby. Therefore David Edwards and Kelvin Langmead are on standby.

    Head to Head

Town have the slightly better record against the Shrews - with 20 wins to their 14. The last time the two sides met at Blundell Park, however, was in Town’s famous 1997/98 season in the FA Cup. Town won the replay 4-0, starting a run that saw them end up with a big tie with Leeds at Elland Road. In that game, Shrewbury had two players sent off (Herbert and Taylor) and Kevin Jobling got the last goal, before joining the Shrews that very next season.

    Connections

  • Kevin Jobling made nearly 300 appearances for Town in a 10 year spell between 1988 and 1998. He was signed by Bobby Roberts, but played mostly under Alan Buckley, as well as Brian Laws and Kenny Swain. Often played at left back, Jobling was initially a midfielder but could play virtually anywhere on the park. After departing Town he then joined Shrewsbury where he made 74 appearances, netting 4 goals before a spell with Telford in 2000.

  • Colin Cramb has played for both sides this season. The temperamental Scotsman fell out with former Shrews boss Jimmy Quinn, which meant he could join up with Town, until his release at Christmas. He is now playing for Hamilton Acadmicals.

  • Darren Wrack (left) had a brief loan spell with Shrewsbury when Kenny Swain was Town boss in 1997. Wrack managed only 5 starts for Town in two seasons before a move to Walsall where he still is, having made well over 200 appearances for the Saddlers.

  • Last Meeting

The two sides met last October in a 1-1 draw at Gay Meadow. Town took the lead after just 5 minutes with a Terry Fleming goal. As has happened too many times this season, the Mariners dominated the first half but then let it slip in the second with Jake Sedgemore getting a goal on 77 minutes - a Anthony Williams howler. Jimmy Quinn left the club soon after this game, paving the way for Gary Peters to take over.
