The Reddy And Rob Jones Show

By: Jeremy Baily
Date: 07/09/2005

After paying £2.50 for the original (rained off) fixture programme, which didn't even have an insert to update any events, I took my £15.00 seat along with about 50 other Town fans, another 100 were standing behind the goal.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Reports > Chester (a)

Biting into my Balti Chicken Pie (it was not this pies first game of the season), I looked around to see my wife returning her pie and getting a pass out to get some chips elsewhere, her pie was a season ticket holder and was drier than the pitch.

We kicked off and gave the ball away, won it back and won a couple of throw ins, no one was doing much on either side, poor passing and big hoofs to nowhere. Then after about 10 minutes Croft played Parky in and he shot well over, but it was a shot.

With 15 minutes gone we were winning on throw ins and everything they launched at us, hit Rob Jones on the head. We then had three corners in quick succession, but they all came to nothing, we were now winning on corners as well, but still nothing on target to get excited about.

With 20 minutes gone we almost went a goal down against the run of play, Bolland made a mistake in midfield and Chester were away, Macca blocked the shot and Rob Jones got booked for a late challenge a few minutes later JPK was fouled in full flow and retaliated, both players booked, our freekick.

Chester had a spell of possession, but did very little, our 4th corner coming before Chester's 1st, which was worked short, Cohen caught one of their players and got booked, the resultant freekick was dealt with.

It was now 40 minutes into the game and a goalkeeper had not made a single save, we had to wait until the first shot on target for 43 minutes, and it was Chester that made this historic first, Mildenhall safely taking the ball. Chester then had 2 more corners during the 3 minutes of time added on, Rob Jones ensured we went in at 0-0.

Half-Time chat:

"A soap dispenser, pity it's empty."
"Don't Chester fall over easy?"
"Can Gary Jones run?"
"I bet Rob Jones can see the racecourse over the stands."
"The coffees OK."

The second half starts at a gallop, with Chester obviously being given a good ear bending, we are still playing not so quick, quick, slow. The second shot on target, again from Chester comes in the first minute after the half-time, but don't worry because we get the ball upfield and win 2 corners, the second of which brings us a penalty.

Rob Jones at set pieces tonight, was brilliant, they couldn't handle him at all, he was felled in the box as he was about to power a header towards goal, JPK slotted the ball away nicely, right in front of the 150 travelling fans.

5 minutes later it is 1-1, a Chester player blocks 2 passes in midfield, his 2nd one releases a forward who slides the ball square and a tap in gets the home crowd going. the game is now hotting up, both sides looking for a second goal. Reddy, his pace unsettling their back 4, bursts through and lay's the ball into Parky's path, he controls it and with only the goalie to beat, he sets himself, gets out a protractor, works out the angle and crafts a shot wide of the post. Reddy again through, hits a rising shot into the side netting, we are looking good. Cohen, who was playing his part, limped off and Barwick came on, about mid-way through the half.

Chester came once more, Rob Jones appeared everywhere to head the ball away, yet again Reddy's speed was our main outlet, this time Parky spooned the ball over the bar, but we were troubling them on the break. Gary Jones went off, for Griffin, he had done very little and looked overweight and slow, if his job was to look big and get bye-passed in every move, then he did his job well. However, I think he was meant to get involved more.

Chester were now pushing hard, but Reddy was enjoying himself and could outpace all their defenders, we just kept giving him the ball, a goal was going to come soon, you could feel it. Bolland had a fine shot deflected for a corner and we had some pressure, but Chester had their moments too, we blocked a few shots and Rob Jones head was called into action again.

Then Reddy was away, all on his own, drew the keeper, he showed everyone the picture he had just drawn, while his well stuck shot hit the back of the net. From then on it was almost all Chester, Reddy went off with a few minutes left for Crane to come on and we held out for the win.

Joint men of the match;

Reddy for his goal, pace and attitude. Rob Jones for being so big.

No one had a stinker, although Gary Jones just didn't look fit, I won't go into a player by player score, but everyone did enough to ensure we won.

Chester's first touch was often quicker and better than ours, but the best two players on the park were ours, and they tipped the balance in our favour. It was not a classic, but a good workman like performance was enough to beat a confident, but poor side tonight.
