Inquest - Town's Makeshift Team Grab The Points.

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 01/01/2006

WREXHAM manager Denis Smith's post match press conference was probably the shortest on record. He was not a happy man and slammed Town's tactics.

"There was only team which wanted to play. The others didn't want to and the result went the wrong way. There were certain things that went on out there that I'm not happy about."

"You saw it and you report it."

Mr Slade stayed a little longer to say; ""Wrexham started much the brighter side - I certainly think that has a lot to do with the fact that this is our third game in six days, it was only their second game and it was a very flat performance from us.

"We deserved to be a goal down, if not two. It wasn't until we got the equaliser that we got some kind of rhythm going and perhaps got in the game. The chances were still going Wrexham's way but there was some resilient defending from players that are not used to playing at the back."

"I'm obviously delighted with the three points but I think that we are a bit fortunate to get all three points."

"When we battled so hard in that second period, with a makeshift back-four, perhaps somebody was looking down on us and said that we deserved a bit of luck here today."

"The last ten minutes was action packed, Wrexham were throwing everything at us. They were 2-1 down, not used to losing at home - it was very difficult for us."

"I'm patching my side up as the minutes go by, I've lost Croft, big Rob Jones, and I've lost Simon Ramsden."

Slade said he was concerned by an incident at the end of the game, when Steve Mildenhall was attacked by a fan.

"That was a very disturbing incident. A fan has come over and Mildenhall has reacted professionally. He's absolutely done nothing, just looked at the man, who's come and actually swung a punch and caught him on the side of the ear."

"We are obviously not very happy about that. The safety of players and management is paramount at football matches. To see that happen is not nice. "
