AT the start of Target 6000, Grimsby Town put in a very impressive first half display which killed off a lowly and unimpressive Barnet team.

Town lined up this afternoon with the return of Justin Whittle at centre back alongside Ben Futcher, with Rob Jones serving the first of a two game ban; it was a new pairing at the heart of the the Mariners' defence. Town kicked off towards the Pontoon end and it wasn't long before we all saw that Barnet were there for the taking.

Within the first few minutes Paul Bolland had a headed chance from a free kick and Gary Jones had a couple of half chances which the keeper dealt with comfortably. Town, however, had to be alert at the back as Barnet’s only chance of the first half came shortly after that when they had a shot just outside the area which flew just wide of the Town goal.

Gary Jones had another chance, this time the ball crossed in from the left along the ground and his low powerful drive was well smothered by the Barnet keeper. Town were dealt a blow half way through the first half when Reddy had to come off; the striker seemed to have some sort of injury. On came Mendes to go on the right wing with Gary Cohen pushed up front along side Gary Jones.

The best move of the half so far came when Justin Whittle headed strongly straight into the path of Woodhouse. The midfielder controlled and turned superbly in the area and his shot was parried by the Barnet keeper. Justin Whittle followed up on the half volley but was well wide and high.

After dominating much of the game so far Town needed a goal badly. It came from Gary Jones; Curtis Woodhouse’s long range shot hit Gary Jones in the area, and he controlled it and placed his shot into the corner of the Barnet net.

Just as the Town fans had sat down a long ball straight through the middle into the Barnet area fell at the feet of Gary Jones and he did well to poke the ball into the bottom corner for his second goal in two minutes.

By now Barnet were finished and Town began to pass the ball around well with ease and confidence, and it showed when Newey’s great through ball found Bolland, who tied his run well, ran into the area and with no Barnet player near him and only the keeper to beat, finished very well to make it 3-0 to Town at half time.

The second half however was not as entertaining as the first. Barnet really defended in numbers, their main priority was they did not want to concede any more. Town, knowing that the job was done, wanted to keep Barnet out, the last thing they wanted was Barnet to grab an early goal back and make it a nervy 45 mins.

However, a free kick to Barnet early in the second half hit the top of the Town bar - slightly lower and it would have made the last 45 mins very interesting for sure!

Apart from a couple of half chances and a one or two runs into the Barnet area by Cohen and Bolland that never quite lead to another Town goal, Town sensed the job was done.

Full credit to Mr Fenty for his target 6000 promotion campaign; the idea of season ticket holders bringing a friend or family to the game for £5.00 each certainly shows that with most of the Town fans there, promotion this season can happen. League Table
