Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby be next season?

January Player of the Month

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/02/2007

JANUARY 2007 was probably the bleakest month in the Mariners' 128 year history. The month began with the heaviest defeat in a decade at home to Rochdale and ended with a mauling at the league bottom's club Torquay. In between Town lost every game, and managed a solitary goal throughout January.

The six players nominated by our readers for the January Player of the Month award, votes from which will count towards the eventual winner at the end of the season, are as follows:

Phil Barnes - Although Barnes has made a few highly visible mistakes recently, it's easy to forget that in some games during the month the Town 'keeper managed to keep the score down to single figures.

James Hunt - The on-loan midfielder made his debut against Walsall and has stayed in the team ever since. Hunt isn't the most prominent player of the pitch but does a lot of work in Town's engine room.

Tom Newey - Town's left back has been one of Town's least bad players during the course of January and his been an ever present during the course of the month.

Martin Paterson - Although he only scored one goal during January Paterson plays with his heart on his sleeve and always gives his utmost. On his day is the best player by a mile in Town's present squad.

Ciaran Toner - The Irishman has never been given a really consistent spell in the team by any of the three managers his has played under at Town, but has often looked the part when he is in the side.

Simon Grand - Grand played the final four games in January and Alan Buckley liked what he saw enough to sign the centre back until the end of the season.

Pleas vote using Question of the Week.
