Newey Posh Target

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 28/10/2007

TOWN left back Tom Newey is reported to be a January target of Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson. Peterborough's official site claims that Posh have made "enquiries" for Newey as well as Lincoln's Lee Frecklington and a non-league player.

With Newey still having 1.5 years left on his contract with Grimsby, Peterborough, backed by multimillionaire chairman Darragh MacAnthony, would not be cheap and Grimsby would be expected to ask for a fee well into six figures to release Town's left back from his contract when the transfer window re-opens in the New Year.

Tom Newey has been one of the main beneficiaries of Alan Buckley's passing style of football. The attacking left back's - who can also play on the left side of midfield - distribution of the ball is far better than when Buckley first arrived at the club. Newey is also a set piece specialist, taking many of Town's free kicks.

Newey was signed from Cambridge by former Town boss Russell Slade after United were relegated to the Conference at the end of the 2004-2005 season.

With Town not having a right back on their books if Newey were to leave it would leave Town needing to get two new full backs in January, hardly an ideal position with six months to go ensure the club's Football League place is secure for the 2008-2009 season.

With Peterborough naming their targets in public if anything it is likely to inflate the fee required to tempt them away from their present clubs.

But with John Fenty looking at a shortfall of over £200K for this season alone, the Town chairman may decide the Mariners have no choice but to cash in on one of their assets and hope that Town's management team can unearth another gem or two.
