Southwell is not a winger. What a nonsense to select him (and a half fit Colbeck on the bench) over Soares.

Why? Bit of a miff that he had some sort of storming game on Wednesday night.

His cross for the goal really was pretty standard. Had acres of space and if a professional footballer couldn't have picked out a team mate from there i'd be very, very worried. Other than that he did naff all.

Right I'd have though.

I picked Soares too but said I might have gone with Southwell cos Scott said he "excelled" on the right at Buxton.

not sure about this mate, think a lot of our young strikers historically have been tried out wide (e.g. lester) to get game time and develop. upto soares to dislodge those 2 via training hard etc...

The problem is that at corners and set pieces both centre-backs go up and that leaves us a bit vulnerable. I think a lot of teams have cottoned on to this and leave a big striker up front for the quick ball from defense.

You mean that tactic that just about every team in the world employs?!

Play to our strengths, our CB's are all good at attacking corners, and should be in the box when we have corners/freekicks....

Todays problem was not getting the 2nd goal in that 1st 15 mins when we were on top. Then we could of played on the break which is S & Hs preference

Not trying to say you're wrong, honestly don't know if we are or not but assumed it was 442.

As for this caught on the break thing suppose it's a concern but if Pearsons header goes in then it's a different story.

We're under pressure mate.
McKeown pulled off what sounded a blinder and they missed at least one good chance.
That said we might have gone 2 up with a Pearson header ourselves.
Hopefully HT break will sort us out.

It still leaves me uneasy when they pump a long ball back at us when a set piece breaks down and we have a lightweight defender marking a big powerful striker. Just because about every team in the world employs it that doesn't make it a sound tactic. Lots of teams play 4-3-3 but we don't seem to be able to function using it.

Name me a team that dosn't send both centerbacks up for corners. They are generally the tallest players on the pitch and therefore the biggest threat at corners.

We seem to be able to pass it about so much better with a wider option, stick to 442 attack the flanks and win those corners etc, 433 doesnt work for us
Posted by: 1600 (Guest), December 1, 2012, 4:02pm; Reply: 46
Or maybe it's a combination of 433/442 with them fanning out and Southwell pushing up where he can.
Just hope Hannah's not isolated out wide.

The its a good point away from home mentality will be the difference between being champions or taking our chances in the play offs.
We really do have to start going to these places and stuffing them.
In the coming weeks one of these teams is going to start pulling away from the chasers ,If we keep dropping points like that it wont be us

Who knows you might be right if fans say they're golddust but didn't sound like it was the case today ?

Sounded like we were doing all we could to get the points ?

Of course there's a risk we might condede on the break but equally we may have won and on this occassion, pushing for the win didn't cost us.
Just we didn't win this time but I was proud of the effort cos it sounded like we did all we could to.

So it's a slight disappointment yes and won't get any easier at Gateshead but it's not for the lack of trying.

We're missing Neilson too and whilst I'm delighted Marshall scored, with Colbeck presumably not 100% (and Soares out for whatever reason), obviously we lacking in numbers today especially on that right of midfield.

So all in all, wouldn't say a point is ever "great", but I'd say a good effort, albeit not the result we all wanted.

I do hope we can keep our players fit and get Neilson back (or someone else if we can't) though.

A very good game played by both sides,

Listening to radio is not the same as being there,

Ebbsfleet will climb the league on this performance,

Grimsby need to create a few more chances and take them to get back on the top of the league,

All the fans around me said Rankine was gash at Buxton but was a lot better today,

On first viewing of Rankine,  I think he could be an asset.

My view is that that statement isn't necessarily correct. We COULD have done more with some better distribution across the team. Too many times we won the ball only to give it straight back to Ebbsfleet. That will do for starters but we could also have done with providing better service to the "goal threat" we do have i.e. Hannah.

Our movement was decent enough yesterday but I agree our distibution or execution of the pass left a lot to be desired at times. Captain Disley was the worst culprit.

There is always a large turnover of possession in the BSP but I think we need to take on more responsibility of delivering more crosses into the danger area and take far more shots at goal. Their keeper yesterday looked a bit dodgy and we should have peppered him with shots.

Rankine in the warm up hammered some stunningly hard shots at goal. Not sure those criticising could have been watching or perhaps he has come with the scapegoat tag!

The first 20 there was only going to be 3 points heading back to BP . We looked like we could rattle up a 3 or 4 goal win . But for whatever reason we let the foot off the gas and reverted to mid table BSP performance . Marshall looks a good player who well need to keep . He was our only source of danger in the second half but too many crosses put in the box were easy for their lump centre halfs . Hannah needs more through balls or wingers getting past their full backs and putting low balls in . Don't see rankine solving our centre forward problem . Looks a lump but not much else . Could just be he's rusty . Not holding my breath tho . Southwell looked ineffective out wide and think its make or break for him . At the end of the day it's up to him to prove himself when given his opportunity . Don't think he did enough for me yesterday .
By the end of the game we seemed as tho we we desperate and lost our heads in and around their box when we needed a couple of cool heads to pick a ball . This was summed up by rankines pathetic effort in the last minute .

To sum up we really should be beating the likes of ebbsfleet if we're serious about going up . We now have to win a potentially more difficult game up at Gateshead Tuesday night .

I think the result was ok, all things considered. For me, the bottom line is not to lose these games - Ebbsfleet away and Gateshead. It's too easy to say 'we should be winning these'. The division is average generally and the top six teams are little more than decent -  we're truly not a great side so we have to be realistic. Staying strong and getting something from Gateshead is the order of the day. For me, the MUST, is that we take 3 points from the home game next Saturday.

If people haven't already spotted them - take a look at Kidderminster. The only reason they're not top 6 is because of heir inordinate amount of draws. They will soon be in contention.

Not sure how a question can be ever be incorrect ?

Anyway fair enough but was thinking more of going for all 3 points as opposed to being happy enough to take just the one.

I've been thinking of this "Would I take a point a Gateshead right now ?" question myself

Think we could lose there tbh but still think I wouldn't cos as we've seen, you can never guarantee a victory in any game even at home.
