alan buckleys trying to be nice about it, but sounds to me like disley will be in the team no matter what, why aren't mclaughin or neilson playing there?

Jennings has a good excuse.  Bad accident near Leeds somewhere.  Their game was delayed by 30 mins.

We may need him.

That first half sounded very familiar! I was expecting a bit more off Town tonight, really hope we can take this game by the scruff of the neck in the second half.
Posted by: chaos33, March 11, 2014, 8:38pm; Reply: 24
Don't understand the selection decision re Disley/left midfield and find it infuriating, given that the same old questions and problems have arisen in the first half:

No service to strikers
No urgency generally and real inability to get hold of the game and take it to a weak side
Can't defend a set piece and conceded a soft goal
Favoured players auto-selected despite playing poorly
Dearth of creative ideas

Just a feeble effort yet again from a team apparently set on getting into the play-offs.

I suspect they are both carrying injuries. Problem is - with 2 games a week, it's going to be difficult for recovery

Stuck in traffic?  No excuse.  Looks like poor preparation to me.  The team should be reporting for duty at lunchtime on a match day, not driving themselves there for kick-off like it's a Sunday League game.

And now I read that, predictably, Pearson has been booked for moaning at the referee.  That man needs to learn to shut his mouth because he's going to end up costing us a game with his indiscipline.

Every flipping home game is thee same and has been for 3 seasons ,this fornicator is clueless .
I'm sure we'll have a load of idiots saying how were still in with a shout and have games in hand ect but we have spent more than all those clubs above except Luton ,We have had the same manager for nearly 4 seasons and he still dosnt know his best team.
He brings in new Strikers every season then sticks them on the bench and rotates them all.We have been consistently excrement in midfield for years and have never looked like getting any better.
Pull the trigger Fenty ,what do you have to lose ?

The mighty Nuneaton and Alfreton make the most of their home games and both win tonight while Grimsby 'don't fret, we're half a dozen games in hand' Town do their utmost to not only stay out of the top 5 but make sure nobody wants to spend a miserable couple of hours sat watching their 'brand' of football.

Utter dross, I sincerely hope that Fenty is prepared to pull the trigger at the seasons end because Hurst simply doesn't have what it takes, another 'hard luck' story from him to add to to Southport, Barnet, Macclesfield etc...

I agree with hackney............ and I have mentioned before how we are so badly prepared physically and to turn up late because of traffic is another example of poor preparation.

I saw the Grimsby town coach drive through Macclesfield an hour before kick off on Saturday! An hour!! We prepare like a Sunday league team.

We can sign as many Forwards/Defenders are you like, but  until we address the  area that hasn't been addressed
for 5 seasons ie: central midfield's lack of creativity, we are going nowhere, we have people who can score goals
given the right service, but the problem is that the service is usually crap and the management for 5 years at least
have done sodomist-all about it.
Bit of a struggle now isn't it?

Posted by: Madeleymariner, March 11, 2014, 10:09pm; Reply: 66
Listening to the commentary it seems that of the players that started, Thanoj and Thomas were the the only creativity on the pitch, as for Rodman, considering how often he had the ball he didn't seem to do anything with it at all.
Posted by: RichMariner, March 11, 2014, 10:09pm; Reply: 67
I think there's a lot of frustration about, and understandably so - but if Cook's goal goes in at the death, we're not posting all that's just been posted.

And yeah, I know - it's not about 'ifs' and 'buts'. These are the fine margins that managers have to deal with, and I don't envy them.

I support my football club and I want it to be the best it can be. At the moment I don't have any concrete evidence that sacking Hurst will improve our situation. History tells us that sacking managers actually makes us worse.

Since we've been in the Conference we've finished 11th, 11th and 4th - let's see where we are at the end of this season. We could yet finish 5th and go up. Who knows?

With respect though Rob, we  made the play offs last year and our shortcomings were  brutally exposed, we
may well make them again, but not sure what  makes anyone have any  real confidence that we will be more
successful this season than our pitifull efforts in last years play off games were.
Hope i'm wrong.
Posted by: StiggsGTFC, March 11, 2014, 10:13pm; Reply: 69
The thing that gets to me is the lack of urgency and not closing teams down in their half. We back off and let them have the ball in so called non dangerous areas.

We need to press teams far higher up the pitch and have periods of pressure, you can only do this if we win the ball back higher up the pitch.

Paul, please please please press higher up. The players can only do this if you tell them to do it and not concede territory when we lose the ball.

Being stuck in traffic is an acceptable excuse for being late for the dentist or a school play, but not for a professional athlete to fail to show up for competition.  The management are to blame for not enforcing a professional matchday timetable: lunching together, stretches and light massage, any necessary physio, pre-game briefing, relaxation and meal, then to the ground in plenty of time.

I have defended PH before, but I have major concerns about his inability to recognise when things need to change.  He is wedded to the same tactics and sticks with failed combinations.  He doesn't seem to be able to motivate either.  A team that was a dead cert for the playoffs and talking of going on a run to challenge for the Championship is now scrabbling around for draws against relegation fodder.

I would like to see PH bring in Buckley to work with the attacking players to add a bit of zip and fizz, instead of laboured, lumbering hoofball.  AB could give the forwards a bit of confidence in their abilities and get them excited about going out on the pitch.
Posted by: jamesgtfc, March 11, 2014, 10:25pm; Reply: 71
This Buckley argument. I'm fairly confident Buckley would not want to work with the first team.
Posted by: 3610 (Guest), March 11, 2014, 10:29pm; Reply: 72
Stiggs....

Agree about the lack of urgency and the high press being an awesome tactic to dominant games but disagree about using the high press with this squad of players. You have to have energy and athleticism to be able to play this effectively. If one player doesn't press then you can be badly exposed. And with the pae of our defence that wouldn't be pretty!

I think the point just highlights the poor acquisition of players, as the midfield in particular are really unbalanced. McLaughlin, Kerr, Disley and thanoj have about as little pace and energy as you can get for centre midfielders and would be run ragged IMO.
Posted by: Teestogreen, March 11, 2014, 10:35pm; Reply: 73
I suppose LJL will be leading the line again on Saturday(with little chance of having any chances), now that Andy Cook has missed a chance in his 9 minutes of action. See you in 3 weeks Andy for another 9 minutes. T'was always the plan from a year ago imo  - for whatever the reason.
Posted by: Garth, March 12, 2014, 9:24am; Reply: 74
Don`t let Cook`s failure to convert after ten minutes on the pitch cover up the inadequacies of the rest of the team by making him the scapegoat, apart from the odd match or two we have not improved from last season performances.

Ironically Kempson, Woody and Jarman are all in a shout of promotion this year, and Franky Artus looked as good last night as he did at Wembley, just where are we going wrong?
Posted by: grimsby pete, March 12, 2014, 10:00am; Reply: 75
Stuck in traffic ?  What the hell is a player who is employed by Scunthorpe United doing living or staying in the Manchester area on a match day,

We are supposed to be a professional club,  players should be made to report hours before kick off have a light meal and talk tactics,

Not just stroll down to the ground a hour or so before kick off,

Grimsby Town are more to blame than Jennings,

Well Jennings  should take a bit of the blame for not allowing enough time to reach Blundell Park baring in mind how many times the roads get closed now days.
