Braintree are creeping into this.  Again we're missing that quality in the final 3rd.

These bunch of cloggers are picking up a few yellow cards now.

Both carthorses booked at the back for Braintree.

Their keeper looks a bit basic.  They've had a couple of sniffs at goal.

Wish we would wip low hard crosses into the box more, we seem to float them in that last one from Bogle was begging for it to be drilled low and hard for Amond to toe poke in

Third time we have played them and we still haven't worked how to beat them!
Posted by: sonofmadeleymariner, May 5, 2016, 7:43pm; Reply: 29
Apart from the opening 10 minutes when all we did was hoof the ball and look a below average side I think we've dominated, they've only really had two chances, we just need to keep th ball on the deck and Bogle and Amond shouldbe able to break them down
Posted by: WHYWONTYOULETMESIGNUP, May 5, 2016, 7:45pm; Reply: 30
Suprised at the lack of urgency from both sides really in the last 10 minutes, think braintree maybe happy to go back to theirs at 0-0 but don't know what were doing. I've not seen much of town on tv this season, I was a season ticket holder for a long long time, but this is the first season ive not got one and ive ended up not going to a single game, watching this to me seems really flat for a playoff semi final, is that just me?
Posted by: Maringer, May 5, 2016, 7:47pm; Reply: 31
They are a threat from set pieces and have one or two decent footballers as well.

We've played a bit better than of late as well, but I think we ought to have done better with a few of our attacks. Bogle taken down when running through on goal but probably just a yellow as it was a good way out. One or two claims for handball in their box as well.

We need to see a lot more from Arnold as he's still looking well below par but Bogle and Amond are linking up well most of the time. Just lacking the final quality of pass/cross.
Posted by: Meza, May 5, 2016, 7:48pm; Reply: 32
We look nervous if you ask me.  Hoofing but now mixing it up.  Arnold hardly been in the game which is a worry....wingers need to be involved as much as possible otherwise they drift out the game and then struggle to get back in it.  There chances have come from us not controlling the ball properly.  There set pieces are worrying.

Arnold needs to come inside more.

Just need to keep doing what we've been doing and the chances might come in the second half

Keep the faith

Bogle is good when he hasn't got time to think - like that thru ball to nolan, a nice flick on and couple of other occasions, but every time he gets the ball to his feet with time he's overthinking and messing up. Hopefully he settles second half
Posted by: The_Chief, May 5, 2016, 7:56pm; Reply: 36
Absolutely no urgency required by Braintree and there won't be.  That's how they play against the better sides.  They'll be as happy as Larry going back with a 0-0, and then diddling us 1-0 at their gaff.  They're waiting for us to slip up, i.e. when the crowd gets a bit frustrated and if we go gun ho and start to over commit players forward, and they'll try and catch us on the counter, and fluke one in from long range.
Posted by: RoboCod, May 5, 2016, 7:51pm; Reply: 37
Monkhouse and Arnold need to get moving and do something, right now they look no better than the long list of loanees who've been here and moved on after a couple of games.
This is a huge game, do they need reminding of that?

One goal will get us on our way.
Posted by: Teestogreen, May 5, 2016, 8:00pm; Reply: 38
Braintree controlling this game - Grimsby Town have produced very little so far - one snap shot from Amond?
They look very fit for part - time pros - doubling up every time we get a sniff of a good move.

Bets hope is they run out of steam 75 minutes onwards, allowing Arnold some space and Monkhouse's replacement to get to the by - line and get some troublesome crosses in!

Dis to get the first?

As desperate as I am for us to go up (but starting to realise that's looking extremely unlikely) I'm almost inclined to agree, purely because it's clear we need a change of direction now.

We got tactically outclassed by a team of part timers. They just hung back, defended their arses off (not that we gave them a great deal of trouble anyway) and just took their chances whenever they could. With the goal in the bag they just totally dropped back and we basically didn't have anything to trouble them with.

He should've gone after the Halifax game , the seasons petered out with a whimper and cannot see anyway that Braintree will concede more than 1 goal on Sunday .
January transfer window was when we should've strengthened- all that happened was he signed a few sub standard , unfit cast offs .

We need 2 energic midfielders innmy eyes.  Disley has been class for us in recent times but for me didn't offer anything from midfield it was like watching nolan do it all.  Time for him to make way i reckon.  We need to start attacking from midfield we need runners there was nothing but static slow moping around.  Absolute abject performance.

What a disgrace.  I'd get that sorry shower of sh1te out tomorrow morning running on the beach.  Each to a man was poor.  This squad of players is simply not good enough.  Midfield non existent, no runners off the ball and woefully lacking in any kind of pace - which you need at this level.

Braintree have done a job on us.  They knew exactly how we would play.  We were so one dimensional and surprise surprise we delivered. Gowling wants fining for that bloody pathetic challenge.

In the end the underdogs didn't manage to get the equaliser.

Simple really: Game over, tie over.  Play offs over.

And how exactly do you see us scoring then? Coz I can't see that we have the players with the guile and skill to break them down

2 banks of 4   who make it 6 when we attack   SO SO SIMPLE     .   A PE teacher could work this tactic tick out , oh ! Hang on , their  manager is a PE teacher .

Saturdays GET is going to be unbearable, well trodden cliches and empty rhetoric incoming!

"Hurst says we have to put Thursdays disappointment behind us and regroup as a unit."

"Nathan Arnold says Town will go  for the kill!"

"Monkhouse says there's still all to play for."

"Disley urges Town fans to make a racket and cheer the team on to a famous victory..."

blah de blah.....Sunday night/Monday morning is going to be the darkest moment I've ever felt as a Town fan. I have ZERO faith in this bunch doing anything remotely close to what is required, then we'll do it all again for the Wembley day out.

I'm not in the Hurst in or out camp right in the middle of the fence , whatever happens not really sure - who would appoint a new manager ? , as much respect as I have for John his record of appointments isn't exactly glowing is it . With Paul we have a steady Eddie , a new manager could go either way .

Forza we do seem genuinely better away from home when the impetus is more on the home teams to come out and attack a bit more where we can use the space and exploit it , will be interesting to see how Braintree set up , there's going to be a lot of nerves for them though even more than us - for their players it will be a once in a lifetime to play at Wembley and chance to reach the league . If we can stay in the game I think we have got a decent chance on their day we have the firepower even recently at Woking and Aldershot we had goals in us I know their set ups not as organised as Braintrees but it gives us hope .

Give it to Doig until Xmas, when he either drops back to assistant  alongside someone we've tracked and negotiated with for over 6 months or, if by some miracle we've hit upon a great manager in Doig he continues in the role.

If FGR go up without a manager installed there'll be hell to pay :-/

100% spot on.

Says it all to me re squad ability when we're desperate for a goal and send a striker on who hasn't scored since November and then a full back!

Unfortunately Braintree don't have to come out and play, they can just do what they've  been doing well all season sit back and wait for us to make our usual mistakes

Another 45 mins wasted against a team who we all knew would come for damage limitation......FFS Hurst try something different to get in between their banks of four...we  need a goal quick as from what i have seen they have had the better half chances without trying too hard to attack.

Massive half time team talk needed.

I expect the usual 20 min purple patch...followed by a stupid goal given away...followed by a 70 min sub

How painfully predictable.

Ronnie Moore & Kev Davis summing it up perfectly....too long too quick, never moved them about enough second half...no plan b.

Two centre halves on a yellow card and just spoon feeding them high balls...so fking p1ssed off that our managers lack of tactics and flexibility hasnt given the players a decent crack at it.

Ronnie Moore seems to talk a lot of sense and he looks okay in a gtfc jacket.............

We can still do it on Sunday.  We are now the underdogs with nothing to lose - no longer any pressure.  The trouble is will PH let them go out throw caution to the winds and have a real go?  I don't think he's got it in him.  I'd sack him in the morning and give Doig a crack - a desperate gamble is needed.

i think the only way possible to do that having watched the last 30 mins would be to shoot direct from kick off !!

They can afford to play exactly the same again on sunday they don't need to come out and attack we have too score twice and having gone 4 and a half hours without scoring, I won't bet my house on us doing it on sunday

This club has absolutely nothing to loose, so Mr Fenty , board meeting in morning and sack Hurst, appoint Doig till after the trophy final, and ffs just go out and play

Midfield crap as usual, tactics ?  crap, substitutions crap, no motivation on or off the pitch.  Do Town want promotion ?  What a stupid question----------or is it ?  It makes me wonder.  Every game is the same and it hasn,t worked for a very long time.      That  Nth.  Ferriby  manager has been linked with the Lincoln job,  he,s had more success than ours ---we couldn,t  do any worse !    The only good thing tonight achieved was to make it 100% the need for a new manager.  But I,ll bet my cotton socks that he,ll still be here come August.

No suprises tonight. Same old stuff in every way. Everybody knows whats going to happen including Braintree.
Last year we were lions. LJL was immense - never have I seen such a energetic performance. 100% effort, he gave it everything. The whole team did.
This year, the players just don't want to know. To be fair, some just aren't good enough
The fans have been a great this year and deserve a lot more than the current regime are giving them. Big changes are due
PH is right though. Its only half time. Fingers crossed they turn up and give it their all.
Could be their last 90mins in a Town shirt/rain jacket

We could be more fast and direct down the wings - how many wingers has Hurst tried this season?  Mackreth, Marshall, Jennings, Stewart and Arnold - and we end up with Danny East on the pitch.  I only saw Arnold really sprint once tonight - and he is dangerous when he does that.  What has Hurst done to Arnold and all the other failed wingers?

[quote=1291]We need 2 energic midfielders in my eyes.  Disley has been class for us in recent times but for me didn't offer anything from midfield it was like watching nolan do it all.  Time for him to make way i reckon.  We need to start attacking from midfield we need runners there was nothing but static slow moping around.  Absolute abject performance.

I agree - Dis anonymous i. m. o  He was given a rest against Tranmere but you couldn't tell. Didn't see him do anything good in the televised game and as you say - Nolan doing the good work but falling short sometimes due to lack of support.

Having said this - Braintree are the best organised side and (after listening to their manager tonight - who is total class) expect them to finish the job off against us. We should be trying to get him for us next season, before his stock goes up to much.

They are a pair,  I,d sack both of them,  and wouldn,t wait until the morning.  They could be in the queue for the Veggy Green job by 9 -0-clock  .  If they wanted to go earlier I,d give them a lift

Well I expressed an opinion that it is pointless to keep having McKeown punt EVERY SINGLE GOAL KICK to Monkhouse, only for him to head the ball to an opposition player and someone in the crowd turned round and said "I haven't missed you flipping moaning".
Well sorry for having an opinion that is completely correct. If you think that is the way to win a football match then you are just as clueless as our wet blanket, uninspiring, stubborn and DEFINATELY useless manager.
Are you by any chance the same guy that said how amazing Mike Newell was a few years back when I called for his head? He was sacked a couple of weeks later after a meltdown on Radio Humberside!
That's almost 300 minutes without being able to score against a part time football team. Our manager thinks he will keep the same tactics for the next match and a chance will come... But he wouldn't put his mortgage on it, oh but we are spoilt aren't we. Oh yes I am feeling so spoilt after tonight's match. Hurst you are a turd in a tracksuit! Clear off!
BYE BYE Hurst !
And a warm welcome to whoever takes the helm next season.

What he,s done is to make everybody lose confidence. What  has he done to Arnold, Marshall and Clay . It makes me wonder if it,s little man trying to be a big bully, and trying to prove a point.  I feel embarassed

Arnold I'm not sure confidence has looked shot the times I've seen him in the last few months . Marshall - don't think he's good enough tbh so fair call ( lightweight , not a target from goal kicks ) . Clay - Rate him but only seen him a handful of times decent midfield player who holds his position more than Nolan but hasn't got the technical ability , AB was saying tonight Nolan wasn't  holding  his position enough in the middle and leaves dizzer exposed and was suprised Clay isn't involved more-  sounds like he rates him . Would add Danny East to your list to - first half of the season he looked like he would play a big role all season but faded out , and we got 2 left backs , was never sure in the point of Robertson and Horward one or the other and East as back up . It seemed like a lot of the budget was wasted one squad players  when we really needed a couple of bits of quality .

Arnold isn't looking half the player he was last season because he can't cut inside off the left like he did last season, he looks lost and uninterested as all he's doing is hoofing the ball up, being ignored by balls being hoofed past him or being asked to launch crosses in, he doesn't seem to of had any direction to run at players like he did last season and the start of this season

feel for you guy's tonight, not the best display by a longshot, but for some desperate defending you could have won this one,.... two shots on target all night [one being the pen, they are  just a simple no frills well organised team, frustrating as f88k....think they had the run of the ball at some crucial times,,,,play them with sustained - continued pace and i think they will crack,, the pressure is now on them to hold the line but i reckon you will crack it sunday,, best of a load of luck... keep the faith,as always guys

Your spot on , a no frills frustrating side . However they win games by their well drilled tactic . Could you watch it every week?    If it were our team knocking above our weight  yes . We know we can and do sometimes play football ,  our players are playing to order when they get on the field . Our fans can see it doesn't work , but the little Yorkshire man  is stubborn and won't do what is needed .

What faith we have had is long gone , it has been getting a chore going watch , more out of habit than love . Once your out of the habit of going it's hard to return .

well i dipped out of the rovers for over 3 years because of the then management, but still had the yearning to go, but my principle of not going while that particular troop were in charge kept me away,  been around 8 times this season and only once last, you may guess what game was!!, but now with the takeover  and the events following it, all is more tempting and my visits will be on the up,,, there is a need for something drastic at :YOUR CLUB" and needs to happen soon or a lot more will feel the urge to go less tempting, and it takes a while to get them all back and singing from the same hymnsheet,  wish you better fortune for the return leg
