Town made several changes for the match with Accrington. Hunt and Bore started in place of Boshell and Stockdale. Hegarty started at left back in place of Hope and Jarman came in on the left side of midfield. Till was named as a substitute.
Accrington created a lot of early pressure and corners and Grimsby needed Phil Barnes to make a good save on 5 minutes.
On 10 minutes Miles and King linked up well to cross for Jamie Clarke to give the home side the lead.
On 14 minutes Proudlock latched on to a poor backpass and chipped over the 'keeper to restore parity - very much against the run of play.
On 17 minutes Akpro curled a shot past the 'keeper which struck the bar, bounced back and was cleared for a corner.
On 28 minutes Accington then hit the post with a free kick.
The first half ended 1-1 with Grimsby finishing the stronger of the two sides.
Early in the second half Jamie Clarke burst through the Grimsby area and scored his second goal.
A minute later Paul Mullin had a goal ruled out for offside.
On 82 the unmarked Akpro shot straight at the 'keeper.
On 84 a long ball to Clarke saw him pick up his hat trick.
