Widdowson and Akpro both returned from injury on a windy and blustery night.

Both teams struggled to control the ball in the early stages of the game due to the difficult and slippery conditions.

On 27 minutes Brentford broke down the left hand side and Town failed to clear the ball when given an opportunity. The ball broke to MacDonald who crossed to Newton, whose miscue fell to MacDonald for a simple finish.

Henderson made a brilliant save to deny MacDonald a second goal 15 minutes later.

The first half ended 1-0, with Brentford shading a wind-dominated game of few chances.

After a dire second half with 25 minutes to go Mike Newell made a treble substitution. On came Bore, Elliot and Proudlock for Jarman, Hegarty and Forbes.

Town briefly came to life with 11 minutes to go when Elliot whipped a cross in which was diverted for a corner.

An awful game ended 0-1.
