Grimsby started with five players in defence.
Both teams had early chances. Lester had a one on one with Henderson, which was intercepted by Atkinson. Then Hegarty went close for Town.
On the half hour Lester left the ball for Lowry who blasted over from close range.
A few minutes later a Gritton shot was delected and fell into the path of Lester, whose shot hit the post.
Town ended the first half strongly with a succession of corners, but at half time it ended 0-0.
Chesterfield took the lead early in the second half on 55 mins. A ball was played through for Gritton, Town failed to clear, but Talbot latched on to it and chipped it over Henderson.
On 75 Newey failed to clear a ball in the box which went staight to Niven, who made no mistake.
Town immediately broke and Boshell forced a good save from Lee. From the resulting corner by Boshell Town scored through a Bennett shot.
For the last few minutes Town played with up front with Jarman coming on for Kalala. But all Jarman managed to do was get himself booked.
