Mike Newell rang in the enforces changes, with Heywood and Linwood coming in. Chris Jones also started. Josh Lillis made his debut.
Grimsby restricted Port Vale to almost no chances for the whole of the first half. Then in then 45th minute a mistake by Heywood allowed the ball to run to Dodds, who volleyed it past Lillis.
Town switched to 4-4-2 in the second half and had a Danny North goal disallowed in the first minute for offside.
Midway through the second half bad defending by Town saw them fail to react to a quick free kick by Vale, and Fraser scored.
On 75 Bennett had a goal cleared off the post.
With 5 minutes to go Boshell brought a player down from behind on the edge of the box. Bosh was sent off, and a penalty was given which Lillis saved.
Within a minute it was three. Collins got in front of a defender and crossed to Collins who beat Heywood in the air.
Vale added a fourth in injury time, with Collins shooting past Lillis.
