Town started with Oxley in goal and no substitute goalkeeper. Chambers was replaced by Leary which Akpro returning up front. Lancashire started and Stirling was on the bench.
Town won a corner on 3 minutes and Sweeney volleyed but it was intercepted.
Town totally dominated the first 18 minutes but without creating much but then Northampton's first attack led to a goal when the front two combined well and Davis finished it off. A minute later Mckay's shot went just wide.
Northampton had a good fifteen minutes after their goal, but Town began to rally towards the end of the first half and Devitt went close.
Three minutes before half time Devitt then turned and crossed to Coulson who finished well from close range at the edge of the box.
Two minutes later Akpro swivelled and shot and Steele saved at his near post.
Two minutes into the second half Town escaped when Northampton hit the post when they looked near certainties to score.
Olly Lancashire was shown a straight red card for use of the elbow. The linesman who was 5 yards away did not react. Stirling came on for Devitt.
After 19 minutes of the second half Sweeney came closed when he tried to curl one into the two corner but it went just wide.
Northampton went in front again when Guttridge picked out Akinfenwa at the far post with a header.
Things didn't go Town's way.
