Grimsby has two good changes in the first few minutes. Hird hit the post and Clarke has his shot blocked when in a great position.
At the other end Barnes made a superb save from Niven.
Roche gave away a penalty for bringing down North, and was booked. Boshell eventually scored from the spot.
After 30 minutes Gray attempted a headed backpass to Roche, who was off his line. North poached a goal which saved Gray from being credited with an own goal.
Fletcher came on in the second half as the visitors moved to a 4-3-3 formation.
Hegarty got onto the end of a cross on 53 to put Town 3-0 up.
Chesterfield brought on two subs and one of them Cooper scored to give the Spirites a lifeline on 773.
With 8 minutes to go Lester crossed to Ward who turned it in to make it 3-2.
Fletcher then struck the post with Barnes beaten.
Almost immediately Roche gave away another penalty which 5 minutes to go which Boshell duly dispatched.
Town did not let it slip again and went on to record the double over Chesterfield, and climb further up the table (see the link).
