New signing Bryan Hughes started for the Mariners in midfield.

Southport made the perfect start when new signing Morley curled the ball into the top corner from 30 yards on 7 minutes.

Southport dominated the first half hour and went ahead from a corner when Davis was left completely unmarked in the six yard box on 30.

Town improved slightly in the first part of the second half, but got a boost when Whalley was sent off for a wild tackle on Connell with 20 minutes to go.

Almost immediately Town won two corners and Duffy popped up in the six yard box to head the second home.

With 5 minutes to go Rob Atkinson got on the end of a long Cummins free kick and levelled the game, something which had looked extremely unlikely a few minutes ago.

On the stroke of full time Cummins received a second yellow.
