Kick off was not delayed despite a M181 motorway pile-up delaying hundreds of fans.

Town almost took the lead when Colbeck hit the woodwork through Colbeck, but the ball bounced out and was played back to John-Lewis, who put Town 1-0 up on 9 minutes.

McKeown did well to deny Winnall's deflected shot, but generally Town were equal to the pressure from the league side.

Near the end of the first half Hannah almost added a second but failed to hit the target.

The first half ended 1-0. Scunny had more possession but Town had the better chances.

Scunthorpe equalised right at the start of the start of the second half. Scunny had a penalty shout which was not given for a foul by Pearson, but the ball fell to Hawkridge who took advantage of the confusion to slide the ball in.

Ten minutes later McDonald headed Grimsby back in front with a free header from a Kerr free kick.

Scunthorpe came close when a Dawson free kick was spilled by McKeown but the ball was eventually cleared.

Town held on relatively comfortably in the closing stages to claim a place against Northampton in Round 2.
