Barnet started well but Town were denied a penalty midway through the first half.
The first half drifted to a 0-0 conclusion.
10 minutes into the second half McLaughlin hit the side netting from a great position from a John-Lewis cross.
Town continued to press and Ross Hannah put Grimsby 1-0 up when he beat the offset trap and hit it first time past the 'keeper just after the hour mark.
With 10 minutes to go Paul Hurst brought on Cook and Hearn for Hannah and John-Lewis and within a couple of minutes to two combined and Hearn placed it into the corner of the net.
From nowhere Barnet were suddenly back into it with 5 minutes to go when the centre back Stephens struck a sensational volley from 20 yards into the roof of the net.
Barnet had a bit of late pressure but Town hung on.
