Towards the end of the first half John-Lewis missed Grimsby's best chance.
The first half ended 0-0 with Town the better side but Grimsby missed the few chances that came their way.
Town finally took the lead midway through the second half. Josh Gowling was the unlikely hero as the ball flicked off him from Macketh's shot into the net.
Town should have made it two when Mackreth and John-Lewis combined but the former hit the post.
Alfreton appeared to have scored but the linesmen adjuged it not to have crossed the line.
John-Lewis headed Town two goals in front from Clay's cross with three minutes to go.
Town held on to keep the run going. Bristol Rovers and Barnet both won but Grimsby at least are still in the title race.
